Jim F. Powers, 39,
Shot While
Resisting Arrest
.An unfortunate occurrence Satur-
day night about 8:30 o’clock in which
Jim Powers was sjiot while resisting
arrest, which caused great excitement
on. the public square.
The shooting followed a difficulty
which originated in the Traveler’s
Cafe, east side , the square. Powers
it is alleged, was drinking and the
proprietor,'Mr. Letot, ordered him to
. leave. - /
There was quite a number in the
cafe who witnessed the difficulty, it is:
said. -1' ■■■''. ■■ ■• '
When Letot told Powers1 to leave;
it is said the latter attacked him 1
(Letot) with a knife, whereupon Le- ’’
tot struck Powers with a' stool.
Officers who had been i 'called
arrived -• just about that t'md and
Powers proceeded up the street. Of-
ficers, it is said, started to’arrest him
when he pulled a knife On one of
' - them, who had to shoot to Save him-
self. Powers fell in the Street; just

to the City Hospital, where he .died.
The deceased was an ex-service
man. He was well-known to the of-
ficers.
The affair is greatly regretted, of
— course. Our officers sometimes have
a risky job to keep. the .peace.
The grandjury will meet next. Mon-
day at which time the matter will be
investigated. ‘

A Spend-the-Day
Party School Girl
Friends Greatly Enjoyed
A spend-the-day party of twelve
school girl friends and neighbors was
greatly enjoyed at the hospitable
home of Mrs. E. L. Burton on last
Friday.
Resourceful “Lizzie,” as she was af-
fectionately greeted, provided a Cor-
rigan way of entertaining by issuing,
invitations written the wrong way and
requesting..thq guests to come with
their hats on hind-part-before, with a.
humorous rhyme of introduction to the
hostess. sample: of verse given by
one of the ladies present was as fol-
lows: \ / .... ,
i: “My name is Jean--
: . And my nose is clean.
If you don’t let me in,
I’ll tap you on the :bean.”
The luncheon table decoration was
a big airplane driven by “Wrong-Way”
Corrigan, ..and: a fleet of smaller air-
planes going the right way-—maybe
to join the Allies. . ; /
A delectable meal .was served
at 1 o’clock, and the afternoon, was
spent in reminiscing.
Mrs. Burton, was before her mar-
riage, one of the foremost teachers in
our city schools, ‘and possesses- a
