Members of the Sanger
FFA chapter traveled to Tex-
as A&M University in Col-
lege Station, TX, on April
28, 2018 to compete in the
state Meats Evaluation Ca-
reer Development Event.
Career Development
Events (CDEs) build on
what is learned in agricul-
tural classes and encourage
members to put their knowl-
edge into practice. More
than 15,400 students began
the statewide tournament
in 28 different events which
reflect classroom instruction
in technical, leadership, in-
terpersonal and teamwork
skills.
The Sanger FFA placed
3rd in the Meats Evaluation
contest out of 160 teams
across the state of Texas.
With the top three teams
only separated by 18 points.
Team Members include: Au-
tumn Kirksey (Sr.), Kielee
Whtiewood (So.), Tatum
Whitewood (Sr.), and David
Wright (Sr.). Every member
of this team had a perfect
score in one or two aspects
of the contest. Autumn
Kirksey was named 3rd
overall and Tatum White-
wood placed 8th overall.
This team has compet-
ed in seven contests and
they never placed lower
than 4th at any contest they
participated in; including
being named the Champion
Meats Evaluation Team at
the Tarleton Invitational as
well as the Reserve Champi-
on Meats Evaluation Team
at the San Antonio Live-
stock Show and Rodeo.
The Texas FFA is the
nation’s largest state FFA
association with a member-
ship of more than 123,000
active FFA members. Agri-
culture, Food and Natural
Resources programs teach
skills in leadership, career
development and personal
growth. FFA gives students
the opportunity to practical-
ly apply classroom knowl-
edge to real-world experi-
ences through local, state
and national competitions.
