ago. “It’s really a disadvan-
tage if you don’t get a good
draw. But top regional teams
get the best starting positions
and I believe it is an advan-
about starting position at the
State Meet in Round Rock
Things didn’t look good
when Olivia Hinojosa, La
Vernia’s top runner edged
out Sanger’s Bryce Perry by
one-hundreds of a second.
Hinojosa finished eighth
overall and Perry came in a
very respectable ninth. Perry
hurt a toe in the first 200 me-
studying times, we also knew
that our second through fifth
runners needed to be before
their fourth runner. All year
I’ve preached how important
the #4 and #5 runners are to
our team especially during a
tight race. This season, we
saw this hold true at two im-
state. Last year she finished
33rd. La Vernia had the edge
with four points and Sanger
had five. Then La Vernia’s
runner Shaley Trammell fin-
ished 30th, then it was down
to Sanger’s fifth best time
Ali Delio coming in 32nd be-
fore La Vernia’s Jessica Per-
ry, who finished 37th. There
was not enough time to cal-
culate all of this in a matter
ters of the race, but gutted it
out to earn her best finish at
Bailee Vrana came in 10th,
two seconds behind Perry
and Dakota Guerrero fin-
time. Robyn Cristiano and
Haylee Story finished 18th
and 19th and Ashley Marti-
nez 25th. La Vernia’s fourth
was positioned, but I knew
we had a chance if they could
beat them to the finish. We
wanted to give themselves
the best possible chance to
win this year - and that’s just
what they achieved. I couldn’t
be more proud - State Cham-
pions,” Davidson added.
“Overall, it was one of
the toughest races that I’ve
ever seen our girls run - they
absolutely gave it their all. I
knew our team had a chance
and five runners right behind
La Vernia’s four and five and
our girls started to make their
sprint to the finish line,” said
Davidson. “I couldn’t see how
couldn’t calculate the points
ourselves, so it was extremely
exciting to see the official re-
sults get posted.”
It’s been a long journey.
“They have been a great group
of motivated individuals who
beat and that we had to get
Bryce (Perry) in front of La
Vernia’s first runner. From
top two or three times that
win a meet, it is the best five
times combined. Sanger’s
next three runners came in
portant races - District and
State.”
