Scout Completes Eagle Project
r llr '
Local Boy Scout, Brian
Grubbs, recently completed
his Eagle Scout Leadership
Service Project for Immacu-
late Conception Catholic
School in Denton. Brian,
a Junior at Sanger High
School, planned and led
the project that resulted in
a new garden shed for the
school’s garden. The gar-
den is used for teaching and
all produce that comes from
the garden is donated to Our
Daily Bread community
soup kitchen to help feed the
homeless.
Brian got the idea for
the garden shed when he
met with Immaculate Con-
ception’s Facilities Manager,
Joe Ketchum. “Joe said they
needed a place to put all their
gardening equipment to free
up space in another build-
ing and asked if I thought
I could do it”, says Brian,
“I said I thought I could.”
The Eagle Scout Leadership
Service Project is just one of
the requirements leading to
Scouting’s highest achieve-
ment, the Eagle Scout Rank.
The scout must plan and
lead the project, including
all planning, budgeting, fun-
draising, materials acquisi-
tion, recruiting and leading
volunteers to complete the
project.
The building is an
8’xlO’ wood frame build-
ing with a sheet metal ex-
terior and a concrete floor
and ramp. “The concrete
floor was added at the last
minute and was not in the
original plan”, reports Bri-
an. “That is why it took so

long to complete.” After
about 6 months of planning,
the project broke ground on
June 30 and was scheduled
to be finished on July 7. Un-
fortunately, delays in pour-
ing the concrete floor pushed
the completion of the proj-
ect into September. “It was
worth the wait. I think the
building turned out much
better with the concrete
floor and the ramp,” states
Brian. “I am very proud of
the way it turned out.”
