Gerald (Jay) Ramsey returns to Sanger,
Texas with his musician partner, Jerry Brown,
at the Elks Lodge on July 26. They met at
North Texas State University and have been
playing music together for over 50 years and
have sold out several one-nighters in Dallas
and Las Vegas in the past year and a half.
Gerald was in the Sanger High School
class of ‘59. It was in high school when a rock
‘n roll band was formed with John Schertz,
Alfred Pennington, Frankie Cole, Johnny
Odom, Loy Odom and Monroe Joiner. They
were first named ‘The Sparks’ until their re-
cord company changed it to ‘The Kids From
Texas.’ (Several years later, Gerald’s record
company changed his name to ‘Jay.’) The
Sanger High School friends once had a per-
formance at the old Texan Theater in Sanger.
The admission charge was 25 cents! They also
had a radio show on KDNT in Denton and
appeared at various area venues such as the
‘Big D Jamboree.’
Jay Ramsey and Jerry Brown were found-
ing members of an award-winning band, ‘The
Expressions,’ where they worked together for
eleven years. (Record companies must enjoy
tinkering with names; their label changed it to
just, ‘Expression.’) The friends moved on to
separate projects. The ‘Jay Ramsey Band’ was
formed while Jerry spent several years playing
the MGM Las Vegas as a single.
Jay was also a busy songwriter with his
original songs being recorded by Elvis, Con-
BED&
BREAKFAST
way Twitty, Roy Clark, Johnny Tillotson
and others. He now produces original mu-
sic in Las Vegas with North Texas grad
Bob Kelly, where recent success has been
in film and TV: Mad Men-AMC, Chicago
PD-NBC, Awkward-MTV, God’s Pock-
ey-Sony Pictures, The Following-Fox TV,
The Playboy Club-NBC, Kill For Me-Park
Pictures, Magic City-Starz, East Bound
And Down-HBO, The New Giri-Sony
Pictures and Hemlock Grove-Netflix.
Jay’s songs and recordings from the ‘60s
and ‘70s are on Fervor Records and are
available on iTunes.
The show at the Elks Lodge in Sanger
will feature Blues, Classic Rock and old
R&B plus a few original songs from their
CD, ‘Out Of The Shadows.’ The cover
charge is a bit more than 25 cents from
back in the day, but it’s a new day and the
audience can expect new memories to be
made.
Tickets for Jay Ramsey’s performance
on Saturday, July 26 at the Elks Lodge in
Sanger (located at the Lake Ray Roberts
Marina) are $10, with children under 10
admitted free. Seating is limited, so ad-
vance ticket purchase is recommended.
Tickets are available at the Elks Lodge or
from Mary West, Bobby Ramsey (940-
458-3847), or Barbara Scheffler (940-595-
6326). Telephone ticket purchases are
available with Visa or MasterCard by call-
ing Barbara Scheffler at 940-595-6326.
