Defense system
for obese people
COLLEGE STATION — Al-
’ though severely overweight
people run substantially higher
risks of heart attack, stroke,
kidney disease, diabetes, cir-
rhosis of the liver and some
forms of cancer, they appar-
ently have as strong a system of
natural defenses against infec-
tion as persons with normal
weight, concludes a new medi-
cal study.
Scientists analyzed protein
levels in the tears and blood
serum of almost two dozen
volunteers weighing between
200 and 300 pounds. The study
also examined blood cell func-
tions.
Dr. David McMurray, a
Texas A&M University immu-
nologist, said that in the pa-
tients tested, obesity alone —
uncomplicated by high blood
pressure or diabetes — did not
impair the body's immune re-
sponse.
