DESPITE HEAVY DROUTH ,
Despite the damaging diouth that this part <>l t
the state suffered in 1963. business in Burleson
has in general shown a nice increase, with bank
deposits up ovf>r $12l).00p. from 1962, and with
bank loans increasing to above $117 000 00 <>vei

clip, with permits being issued for 86 new resi-
dences. total value of which exceeded $1 million
through November, as figures were not complete
for December Commercial building permits a-
rnounted to $77 400 for 1963 through November.

City Manager Ray Bentley said definite fig-
uies had not been compiled as to the nuinlxT of
new families the city had gained during 1963, but
he would say at least 190 or more new families
had moved to Burleson to make their home. This
is of course above jhose that have moved out.
The city water shortage was solved with the
agreement'with Fort Worth to, buy water from
that city, with an abundance of water by sum-
mer of 1964 promised. Street improvement-dur-
ing 1963, with more planned for 1964 is going to
add much to the older part of our town. Contract
has been let on a new l
building. and at 'east, one
planning a new 1-------
with an increase m mdustral growth expected be-
tween Burleson and Fort Worth during this year,
our growth picture is looking very good for not
only 1964, but for years ahead

IMPORTANT HAPPENINGS THAT MADE NEWS IN BURLESON THE PAST YEAR
JANUARY 9—City officals announced that Fort
Worth officials would meet with the council at
next meeting to discuss Burleson buying water
from Forti Worth.
JANUARY 16 —Announcement by schbol'board
that at Monday nigt’s meeting they yoted to
purchase from the Himbee Construction Com-
pany approximately 8 acres of land for $11,-
500.00, on which.a third elementary school
building would be built when the necessity a-
rises, which was expected to be in 1964. Also,
Dr. Harold Putnam sworn in as new board
member, to fill the- unexpired term of Jack
Hagler, whose term expires in April 1964. Sto-
vall Chevrolet moves into new home on High-
way 174. New Taxi service folded in less than
a week.
JANUARY 23 — Cold weather does extensive
damage to plumbing, kills twelve cattle, wipes
out oat crop, hurt business in general and play-
ed havoc with those having to commute back
and forth to their jobs in the city. Numerous
grass fires over the area that caused lots of
concern from several volunteer fire depart-
ments. Noble Wood barn and hay burrts.
JANUARY 30 —Twenty boxing matches, Burle-
sons first, held Feb. 2. School board authorizes
issuance of $170,000.00 bonds to build classroom
at Junior-Senior.
FEBRUARY 6—Elk Field being readied. Sunk
mer Science Training for Secondary students
available. Bob Bransom was elevated to Vice
President of F & M State Bank, with Mrs.
Dixie Hurst made Cashier.
FEBRUARY 13 — E. B. Burns celebrates 87th
birthday; lived here 80 years. Darrell’Itaybum
assumes duties as pharmacist at Hillhy Pharm-
acy. Motor wrapped in blanket to save freeze,
catches fire, when motor started by wife next
day.
FEBRUARY 20—First grader struck with menin-
gitis. Many take prevenative medicine. Youth
banquet held at First Baptist Church.
FEBRUARY 27—Tall downtown water tower
sold, to be dismantled and moved. Sale proba-
bly fell through as it) still stands.
MARCH 6—Rep. J. E. Ward pledges help in our
fight against Fort Worth grabbing land. Lions
Club completes project of permanent home for
scouts. Furniture polish fatal to infant.
MARCH 13—By this date seven men had an-
nounced as candidates for places on city coun-
cil. Cleburne Savings and Loan Association
«. opens office here.
MARCH 20—New Elementary school to be built
in Southwest Village addition.
MARCH 27—Baptist pastor planning tour of Ori-
ent. Council accepts cheaper electric rates.
