Andy still owns the Grand The-,
atrc in Stamford, which is a grand
old 900 scat theater made the way
theaters used to be with lovely car-
pets. double doors and a huge con-
cession area. “It’s ready to go.
Everything is in perfect working or-
der. I’d like to see the community
groups and organizations in
Stamford get together and purchase
it to hold community events,” Stone
said.
He put the theater up for sale in
1985 when his wife died. “All of the
f un went out of show business when
she died.” he said.
For most of Andy's life, show
business has been his main liveli-
hood and he has worked in all phases
of tire theater business from the ait
department to manager of chain
theaters and drive ins to owner and
manager of a drive-in and theater in
Stamford
“Advertising was a big part of
show business," he said. “We used
(o create false advertising fronts that
were collapsible and moveable for
the front of the theater, advertising
the present attraction and feature
those shows to come.”
During his high school years
Stone worked with the lop art man
with the R& R Theater chaim aanan
who showed Stone the ms and eMs
of marquee and circular adUcrtih-
ing
different than the one the previoua
night. So. it won’t hurt to go every
night.
And of course, the Western Ait
Show and Sale will be open to the
public each day during the rodeo at
the John Selmon Memorial Pavil- ,
ion Building.

On July 4, the new Team Roping
will be held in the main arena con-

Chuckwagon teams from all over

hands to exhibit their “open fire”
cooking skills as well as show a
little authenticity. This event will

Theatre owner recalls prosperous business
Just spending a few minutes or
an hour talking to local theater
owner, A.J. (Andy) Stone is like
getting a lesson in the history of the
theater. Andy brings all of the old
stars and a former way of living and
working to life.
His backyard in de Cordova Bend
Estates at Granbury, is a silent
memorial of another era.
Andy has always been fascinated
with the theater. “I started out deliv-
ering circulan in 1927 for the Al
cove Theatre in Stamford,” he said,
“and stayed on in the business an-
other 55 years.”
“I was in show business during
that wonderful era when vaudeville
was coming to an end and the silent
movies were beginning to talk."
Stone managed or owned thca
ters and drive-ins in Stamford.
Haskell, Tyler, Staton, Baird. Al
bany, Beaumont and Graham to
name just a few.
“Mort of those theaters arc gone
now,” Andy said. “There used to be
a time when going to the movies
was something special. The thca
ters were designed to be spcctacu
lar, to make going to the theater a
memorable occasion.”
However the large, gilded pic-
ture show with velvet covered scats
and intricately carved ceiling mold
ings is a thing of the past, replaced
by the small, box tike cinemas we
have today in shopping centers and
malls across the United States
