not long ago, when folks
I w ould come from miles around to attend
|gatherings known as community singings, or
|“sangins,” as they were better known. Those
who came caught up on news with friends and
i family they might not have seen for some time
while enjoying a gospel music show by talented
I neighbors; but, w hat everyone seemed to relish i
most were the sing-a-longs.
In an age when most church congregations
were small, the chance to join in a chorus of
hundreds was not to be missed. They made the
old hymns thunder and Heaven seemed to come
dow n to earth.
If you have ever wanted to re-live those davs

distance. I try to remind
myself of the old adage
(Shannon's paraphrasing): If
you love them, let them go.
They will return if they are
yours, and if they don’t
return, they were never yours
in the first place. She has a
good head on her shoulders
and more sense than 1 had at
that age, more than I have at
this age sometimes. She is a
pretty girl, and a caring,
loving human being. I am very
proud of her. I guess I must
have done something right.
So, fly on momma bird, your
babies are safe with me.

I was thinking about old age
and decided that it is when
you still have something on
the ball ..... but you are just
too tired to bounce it.
Danger! Keep Away
Upon entering the little
country store, the stranger
noticed a sign saying;
DANGER! BEWARE OF
DOG! Posted on the glass
door, inside he noticed a
harmless old hound dog
asleep on the floor besides the
cash register.
He asked the store manager,
"Is THAT the dog folks are
supposed to beware of?"
"Yep, that’s him," he replied.
The stranger couldn't help but
be amused. "That certainh
doesn't look like a dangerous
dog to me. Why in the world
would you post that sign?"
"Because," the owner replied,
"before I posted that sign,
people kept tripping over
him."
Mary Had a Little Damn
A first grade teacher had a
small number of children
gathered around a table for a
reading group. After the
story was read she gave the
children a work sheet to do.
She thought they may have
some trouble with it, so
wanted them to work on it
right then.
She heard a little girl named
Mary softly say, "Damn!"
The teacher leaned over and
said quietly to little Mary,
"We don't say that in school,
Mary."
Little Mary looked at the
teacher with her eyes very big
and innocent and she said,
"Not even when things have
all gone to hell?!"

grocery shopping. I imagine
by now, she’s probably frantic
about their welfare and safety ,
and feels helpless to do
anything but fly around in
circles.
I know how she feels. A year
ago, my 16-year-old daughter
left to go live with her father.
He lives about 600 miles away
from where I live, so this is no
small move, and it took every
ounce of will power I had to
Jet her go. It is a growth
■ . pvnerience for the both of us. I

have come to terms with her
being gone, but I still miss her.
Unlike the mother sparrow,
however, I still have contact
with my youngun. She and I
talk on the phone about once
a week, and I try to catch up
on what she is doing. It’s not
the same as having her here
