"Great Minds Think. A Kid’s
Guide Tb Money” is an activ-

Once upon a time (in LaLa Land), the city commission was having a think session at city hall.
Intrigued by this unusual activity, a fly, which was perched on the light pull chain above the
commission table, crept downward a few inches.
"We have to think of something to lure people to town,*' said a commissioner.
"Well," said another. "We have a park that looks like a junkyard garage sale, antique brick streets
that drive like a roller coaster, and the highest utility charges in the area. That ought to count for
something."
"Yes," said the third. "Everyone knows that the more you pay, the more important you are. That
should be a real plus."
The fly counted the metal balls on the pull chain. It wondered if it had a longer chain than the other
flies would it be more important than they were?
"Eureka!" said the mayor. "I know the very thing. It's a totally new idea thought up by me!"
"What?" they all said, leaning forward.
"We'll turn this into a bedroom town!"
They clapped their hands for joy and danced around the table. The fly, who was gun-shy about
swats and claps, panicked and looped the pull chain around the light. The city manager stewed silently
(an unusual state for him) trying to figure out how to get credit for thinking up this great idea.
"Wait a minute," said the fourth commissioner. "Why would anyone drive 25 miles to a town with
no shopping, few restaurants, nothing to do, and no services when they can drive 10 miles to at least
three other towns in the area and have all the amenities plus a lower cost of living?"
"Fiddledeedee," said the leader of the gang. "You are being unpatriotic, unsupportive, disloyal and
probably un-American. As rulers-oops, excuse me, leaders of this town, we have to present a united
front. You can't disagree with us!"
The fly did a few turns around the pull chain.
"What else can we do to let people know this is a great place for a bedroom town?
How do we advertise?" they asked.
"We could ask Sam, he had experience in advertising, or Ann, she's done marketing for a lot of
places. Dora, she's been in publicity and community liaison for years..." suggested the unpatriotic one."
"Oh, no!" the others chorused. "They might not agree with us; we can't have anyone like that."
"Besides," said the city manager. "They could get the credit for it."
"We can't possibly put anyone who knows more than we do in a position of authority," they sniffed.
The fly hung upside down from a short drape in the pull chain and tried to figure out how to unsnarl it
from the light.
The commission puzzled for a while.
"I know!" said one. "We'll change out the lace curtains in the city hall windows and put in ruffled
ones. I've some wonderful genuine fake Chinese Tiffany lamps that we can put in eveiy window."
"Yeah," agreed two. "We'll spruce up city hall! Make it look like a luxury bedroom!"
The fourth commissioner put his head in his hands. "OMG," he said.
In the midst of unwinding the chain from the light, the fly guffawed loudly.
"What was that?" said the leader, looking up.
"I don't know," said another. "It sounded like a tiny 'mmwhahahahah."
The fly clapped its feet over its mouth, lost its balance and slid to the end of the chain.
"And we can put twinkle lights in the trees-oh, can you do that with crepe myrtles? Well
mind; we'll make the street lights pink."
Secure in the notion that no town had ever thought of becoming a bedroom town for commuters
and ignoring the Hialeah Heights Addition disaster^ the commission basked in its self-made glory.
The fly swung back an forth on the end of the pull chain. "Lullaby....and good night..." it sans.
