Severe Weather Awareness Week by
Governor Ann Richards.
Severe weather warnings are inef-
fective if the public docs not receive
the warning or is not knowledgeable
on the safety procedures to follow.
The purpose of Texas Severe Weather
Awareness Week is to provide people
with the knowledge necessary to pro-
tect their lives when severe weather
threatens.
A tornado drill is scheduled for
North Texas on Wednesday, March
9. Between approximately 10:00 and
10:30 a.m. that day, there will be a
special test of the North Texas NOAA
Weather Radio alarm system as well
as the transmission of the Tornado
Drill Exercise on the CONTEL
weather wire service. The drill will
give those in homes, schools, bospi-,
tals, and businesses the opportunity
to see if they can receive a test severe
weather watch and warning in a timely
manner and then take the same pre-
cautionary actions which would be
carried out during an actual tornado
event.
In some areas, emergency man-
agement officials will test local si-
rens when the practice tornado warn-
ing is issued. Should the weather be
threatening at that time, the drill will
be postponed until the following day
• (Thursday, March 10) at 10:15 a.m.
The governor has issued the fol-
lowing proclamation:
Each year brings the potential for
violent weather-tornadoes, flooding
and flash flooding, lightning, hail and
thunderstorms-to our state.
Annually, large portions of the
State of Texas arc devastated by Hood-
ing and tornadoes. Lives are lo^tang .
citizens' homes are destroyed'by
nature's forces. Severe weather can
affect any region of Texas, creating a
need for state and federal assistance
to citizens in the disaster area.
The Governor's Division of Emer-
gency Management, the National
Weather Service and the T exas In-
surance Advisory Association urge
private citizens, school leaders, busi-
ness owners and local governments
to become aware of the need to plan
and prepare for severe weather.
Preparedness information is avail-
able from libraries, weather service
offices and state and local emergency
management offices. The stale, as
well as many local governments, of-
fers help in developing emergency
