The casebearer completed one gen-
eration at the end of May and will
complete the second generation 42
days later or about now. Growers
should scout their orchards and look
for possible signs of damage.
Second generation casebearer is
usually not a real problem unless you
missed treating for the first genera-
tion. Recommended spray is lorsban.
PECAN SCAB
Pecan growers should be spraying
for pecan scab as conditions have
been ideal for scab to develop. Cur-
rently we do not have too much leaf
scab but in a few orchards I have
visited the nut scab has taken hold
and is spreading. Remember to ro-
tate your fungicides so that no resis-
tance can develop.
MELON YELLOW VINE
The Melon Yellow Vine disease
is again a problem in early planted
cantaloupe and watermelon fields.
Over the past two weeks. Dr. Bolton,
Dr. Lee and myself have been in
numerous fields where plants were
dying as a result of this problem. We
do not have a treatment available in
fact we are not real sure what the
disease is or how it is spread. We are
doing several research projects to find
out and will keep growers informed.
In case you are wondering if you
have this problem, look for wilted
vines that are very yellow in color
with leaves standing straight up in
most cases. When you cut through
the plant base, there is a tobacco
colored ring around the stem.
Positions Available -- A variety of
production positions are currently
available. We are seeking depend-
able, hard working people for full-
time employment. Good benefits

Message For
Brides-To-Be
It's the time of year when many
brides-to-be are busy with a list of
“things to do” before their wedding.
The Social Security Administration
(SSA) would like them to add one
important, but easily managed item,
to that list.
“If you’re going to change your
name when you marry, remember to
tell Social Security," says Eric
Johnagin, manager of the Brownwood
Social Security office.
For women who are working, re-
porting a name change assures that
they will receive proper credit for
their earnings and, one day, all the
Social Security benefits they are due.
For women who don’t work outside
the home, reporting the change will
ensure that their Social Security
record shows the correct name when
the time comes to apply for benefits.
Another important reason to re-
port your change of name is that
Internal Revenue Service and SSA
records should show the same name
and Social Security number. If they
don’t, your tax refund could be post-
poned.
“Of course, if a woman continues
to use her maiden name after mar-
riage, as many women do today,*!
said Johnagin. “they don’t need td
report the marriage. They just haw;
to be sure to use their maiden name
consistently throughout their work-
ing years. And if someone should
change her mind later, let Social Se-
curity know at that time.”
To report a name change, call So-'
cial Security’s toll-free number, I-’
800-772-1213, any business day be-;
tweert 7 am. and 7 p.m., or call dr
visit your local Social Security of-
fice. You’ll need to complete ah
Application For a Social Security
Card and provide either your mar!
riage certificate to verify your old
and new names or two documents—;
one with your maiden name and on<
with your married name. All dociP
menus must be originals or certified
copies. The application form lists
acceptable documents.
Johnagin reminds everyone th^i
the service is free. “Don’t be misled
by any business that offers-for a fees’
-to complete the paperwork for you!
The progress is simple and you don’f
need to pay anyone for a revise^
Social Security card.”
♦There is a limit to the amount
you can earn and still receive aliyot*
Social Security checks. This amount
increases each year.
*You can get both Social Security:
benefits and military retirement!
Generally, there is no offset of Social
Security benefits because of yotif
military retirement.
♦Social Security treats all call*
confidentially-whether they 're made
to the toll-free number or to a local
office.
♦You never have to pay for Infor*
mation or service at Social Security-
Some businesses advertise that they
can provide name changes, Social
Security cards, or earnings statemeqi
for a fee. All of these services aijt
provided free by Social Security. •’
