Atkinson as resident lay reader. The
Sunday School was organized on Jan. 12,
1896. Services were first conducted in the
Opera House; then, in the Knights of
Pythias Hall, until the church building
was completed.
On February 20. a building committee
was named; and on March 20. 1896, the
first service was held in the new church,
at the corner of Hardie and Lang streets'
with the Rt. Rev. H. G. Kinsolving. Bishop
of the Diocese of Texas, confirming a
class of seven candidates. On April 10.
1896, the church building was consecrated
by Bishop Kinsolving, with the Rev. C
M. Beckwith of Trinity Church, Galves-
ton. and the Rev. J. R. Carter of Grace
Church. Galveston, assisting; and a class
of six persons was presented for confir-
mation Flevpn more people were cor.
firmed, in October, making a total of
twenty-four in the first ten months On
November 25. a Thanksgiving service
was held; and a donation was sent to
Buckner's Orphans Home. A very busy
11 months.
The first resident rector was the Rev.
A. J. Burnett, who came to Alvin in April
of 1399. He died, suddenly, in Galveston,
on Augucr 4. 1900. just a month before
the hurricane of that year.
The hurricane completely ruined the
church building, and most of its contents;
and services were heid in the home of
Captain J. T. Cubbs until it was re-built.
This work was done under the supervi-
sion of the Rev. Dr. Dorsett, who also
supervised the rebuilding of the Episcopal

gleton. Money to help with the rebuild-
ing was sent by residents of New York,
Maryland, and other areas of Texas; as
well as by Grace Church, New York City,

The history of Grace Church exempli-
fie .omerhtng of the missionary nature
of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Grace
Chur, h, Alvin, became a mission of Trin-
ity Church. Galveston, with Mr. Windom
serving a Lay Reader-in-charge, and Mr.
St. Joseph, Mo.; Bishop KinsolvLig. of the
Diocese of Texas; and Bishop Garrett
Trinity and Grace chur< he^ of Galveston
furnished windows, altar rail, seats,pews,
and other furnishings, from their own
rebuilding projects.
Grace Church, Alvin, was admitted to
parochial status on January 23, 1945.
thus ending its history as a Mission in
the Diocese of Texas. Through a-, of its
years, it has been ever ready to extend
a helping hand to other . the most recent
example being a contribution sent to the
Bishop of Alaska, to be used f r relief
of the hardships caused by the recent
earthquake there
In March 1951, the hr st Rui.tory wa

was replaced with one of bri ■. in which
worship services were held from Sept em-

time the 60-year old frame • urch wa
removed and the present brio one built.
The interior is furnished and decorated
by innumerable memorial o members
who have worshipped here during the
