Here are some things that
you can do to keep the bike-
auto accident toll down;
-- Remember that bicycles
are vehicles with rights on
the highways, just like auto-
mobiles. While cyclists should
keep to the right and in single
file, motorists should slow
down and take special care
while passing them.
-- Get involved in a com-
munity bike safety campaign.
One that’s active all over the
country is the “Lite-A-Bike”
program of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars. Through this
program, some seven million
bikes have been inspected and
equipped with free reflective
tape The same material used
on street signs and ’'safety’’
license plates, the tape is vis-
ible at 1,500 feet in the head-
lights of a car. Any recogniz-
ed organization can get free
tape from the VFW for such
projects.
-- Don’t forget that young-
sters some times are unpre-
dictable. Be ready for any-
thing when you are driving
around children on bicycles.
In residential areas, be watch-
ful for bicycles darting from
between parked cars or shoot-
ing down driveways into tiuf-
fic.
-- Instruct any young cy-
clists in your home in the
rules of the road, and, if you
decide to take a bicycle spin
yourself, don’t forget that the
traffic rules apply just as
much behind handlebars as
they do behind the wheel.

the fourth Wednesday of each
month, at 7;3Q p.m. at the
school.
It’s spring, and drivers
are likely to be seeing more
budding flower. sprouting
trees -- and bicycles.
Keep an eye on the bicycles.
Aboard most of them you’ll
find youngsters who are too
young to drive but feel they
are too old to walk. They will
peddle most of the 30 million
bicycles coming out of winter
storage this month.
Bicycling is fun, both for
the kids and the many adults
who are taking to two-wheel-
ers. It’s good exercise, too.
Dr. Paul Dudley White, famed
heart specialist, recommends
it as a physical conditioner
for young and old.
There’s another side to bik-
ing. though, and that’s where
you, as a driver, come in.
Last year, some 570 persons
were killed tn bike-auto ac-
cidents. and another 30,000
injured.
Of the total, 380 of the dead
