Alayna Pi ppin earned the win
in the pitching circle, allowing
only one Lady Eagle to reach
base with a hit in the second in-
ning.
The Lady Mavs evened their
league mark to 1 -1 and improved
to 6-5 overall as well. While the
Manvel Girls watched their six-
year consecutive streak of mak-
ing the playoffs snapped last
season, second-year head coach
Beth Dietrich is pleased with
her team’s progress through the
initial 11 games.
“We have really come togeth-
er as a team,” Dietrich said fol-
lowing the game. “The slogan
for this year is the unit and you
can tell they’re buying into it
every day at practice. We’re lay-
ing out for balls we didn’t use to
sport a different mascot color,
there’s no coincidence about
the pattern bearing a striking
resemblance to the Houston As-
tros’ famed rainbow uniforms
initially worn by the MLB club
in the 1980’s and now on throw-
back occasions.
Dietich, who grew up as an
Astros’ fan, said the jerseys
even had to be returned for a
correction after they instead

“We’re coming out of the
box swinging out of our shoes.
We’re not afraid to make mis-
takes which is big for us. We’ve
been that team that wasn’t con-
fident at the plate. So for us to
come out this year is an amaz-
ing difference. Our defense has
stepped it up a level. In the drills
at practice, the girls are ready
for it instead of being back on
their heels. They’re not ques-
tioning it any more. They’re
giving it everything they have.”
Manvel wasted little time
demonstrating that added ag-
gressiveness at the plate, put-
ting the game out of reach with
an immediate 12-run uprising in
the bottom of the first inning.
Baylee Allender drove in
three runs with a pair of triples,
while Alyssa Villanueva deliv-
ered a two-run double and an
RBI single for another three tal-
lies and Jillian Thomas chipped
in another two-run double.
Allender and Alexis Uresti
then highlighted off a five-run
second nning with both Lady
Mavericks driving in runs with
hits.
