wide Wings of Freedom Tour is
celebrating its 27th year and vis-
its an average of 110 cities in over
35 states annually. Since its start,
tens of millions of people have
seen the B-17, B-24 & P-51 dis-
play at locations everywhere.
The Wings of Freedom Tour
travels the nation as a flying trib-
ute to the flight crews who flew
them; the ground crews who
maintained them; the workers
who built them; the soldiers, sail-
ors and airmen they helped pro-
tect; and the citizens and families
that share the freedom that they
helped preserve. The B-17, B-25
and B-24 were the backbone of
the American effort during the
war from 1942 to 1945 and were
famous for their ability to sus-
tain damage and still accomplish
the mission. Despite the risks of

it being indoors and comfort-
able, will ensure that all fami-
ly members will be able to see
their graduates walk across
the stage,” said Jennifer Val-
dez, Alvin ISD administrator.
In the past, Alvin ISD stu-
dents have graduated outside
at Alvin ISD Memorial Sta-
dium, located on the campus
of Alvin High School.
At the time of the 2016
commencement ceremonies,
the stadium will be under con-
struction, hence the need for
the location change.
The Citizen’s Advisory
Committee recommended the
need for stadium upgrades pri-
or to the approval of the 2015
Bond Election.

AISD selects graduation venues
Once the group of commu-
nity members suggested that
renovations to the stadium be
considered in the November
2015 Bond package, princi-
pals proactively began a pro-
cess which involved numerous
meetings with high school stu-
dents to discuss the pros and
cons of moving the 2016 grad-
uation ceremonies to a differ-
ent location, as well as parent
and student surveys.
The vast majority of the
feedback received positively
leaned towards transitioning
graduation to a different facil-
ity.

I wasn’t convinced we would have
much of a response from a little ad in
the newspaper (Alvin Sun-Advertiser),
so initially, we opted not to run one. We
created a landing page on our website,
purchased outdoor billboards, sent out
emails, and even did some paid Facebook
advertising. When those things weren’t
driving the response we anticipated,
I decided to reach out to our local
newspaper (Alvin Sun-Advertiser) and
see what options were available. After a
quick meeting, I decided to run a small ad,
just to see if we could get the ball rolling.
The week the ad ran, the response was tremendous - more people were
calling, coming in, and visiting the landing page than we anticipated. Google
Analytics showed a huge spike in web traffic for the landing page during the
time the ad ran. Next time, we’re definitely including newspaper (the Alvin
