Keep the Sangerfest ball rolling.
The Chamber of Commerce will do
noble work for Galveston if properly sup-
ported financially.
Evening Tribune acknowledges its in-
debtedness to United States Senator
Reagan for valuable public documents.
Things are not coming as smoothly for
the railway commission advocates at
Austin as they expected. The senate is
the stumbling block.
The Senate has adopted a resolution
calling the attention of the secretary of
war to the pressing need of further bor-
der defenses in Texas.
The Houston Post is now delivered to
its regular subscribers in this city in ad-
vance of the morning news. The old
lady should get a move on herself or her
carriers.
The Fort Worth Gazette makes its ap-
pearance with a new head—not editori-
ally, but typographically—which in
Evening Tribune’s opinion gives it a
decidedly more metropolitan appearance.
The petition to the county commis-
sioners, now in circulation and asking for
a bridge to the mainland attests by the
signatures attached how almost univer-
sally the business men of the city and
the heaviest tax-payers favor the project.
Assistant Postmaster General
Tyner has ruled that if the postage upon
a letter is fully prepaid no postmaster
has a right to detain it, no matter what
he may suspect it contains or to whom
it may be addressed. This is fruit for
the lottery companies.
A statement prepared by Representa-
tive Sayers, this state, places the total
permanent annual and miscellaneous ap-
propriations made by the congress just
ended at $1,006,270,471, against
$817,063,850 made during the Fiftieth
or preceding congress. A thousand
million of dollars is a pretty good pile.
There is always more accomplished
by prompt decisive action than by giving
a matter too much deliberation. Put
your name down when the Chamber of
Commerce soliciting committee waits
upon you and not compel them to come
back a second time. They have their
own business to look after.
Senator Morrill of Vermont has
begun his fifth term as United States
senator. If he should live to finish this
term he will be the only man, with the
exception of Thomas H. Benton, of Mis-
souri, with a record of thirty years’ con-
tinuous service in the senate. He will
be 81 years old next month.
The Fort Worth Gazette designates
Senator Carter’s anti-corporation bill as
“an instrument of tyranny,” and says it
will result only in senselessjstatements
and only vex and harrass corporations,
leaving the impression on foreign capi-
talists that Texas is fully determined to
slaughter every institution that tends to
increase personal opulence and public
prosperity._
Galveston needs a union depot that
shall be adequate to all present as well
as future requirements. ’ On this
point the railroad people as well as the
business community seem to be a unit,
the only question now is whether the
roads already entering this city should
undertake the task of erecting one, or if
a union depot company should be organ-
ized to build and fit up a structure that
forever would be a monument to Galves-
ton’s enterprise and progress.

Rousseau the Landscape Painter.
As we stand before a great landscape
by Bousseau like the “Bavines of Apre-
mont,” lately in the collection of M.
Marmontel, or of the “Hoar Frost,” in
that of Mr. Walters at Baltimore, one
must call up a powerfully built man of
middle size with a full brown beard; a
wide, high forehead, which his friends
declared Olympian; a shapely, straight
nose; hair worn rather long, after the
fashion of forty years ago; direct limpid
gaze from eyes of unusual largeness and
grayish blue in color, and a mouth whose
lines indicate the absorbed man and the
reticent. Fie was an extremely thought-
ful man, not by any means smileless and
the furthest remove from stupid; he
was one of those who are hard to win
for a friend, but once a friend, eminent-
ly the person with whom to pass weeks
in the pursuit of a worthy study. There
is the sympathetic man who talks, and
the sympathetic man who is silent.
Rousseau was the latter. Yet he could
talk, and talk well, on nature, art and
music, and he wrote a charming letter.
—Charles De Kay in Century,
Not a Charity.
In any just view of a quarter of a
century of journalistic work the most
prominent feature, and one giving great
satisfaction to respectable publishers, is
that printing a newspaper has become
recognized as a business and not a char-
ity.—Owen Scott.
Small Farms.
One of the mistakes of the times is the
popular belief that everything in a busi-
ness way must be big. The idea has
grown out of our haste to grow wealthy
and from superficial calculation, such as,
if one acre pays $100, 100 acres would
pay $10,000. Men seldom make such
money out of vary large orchards, and
while a source of envy to small holders
they are often, in fact, just holding on
or are running ahead on borrowed capi-
tal. The men who make money and are
getting rich out of horticultural pursuits
are those who do not attempt more than
they can look after personally. From
ten to eighty acres are the sized tracts
which pay the highest per cent, of profit,
if they are properly conducted. The
idea that a living cannot be made out of
small place has retarded many from go-
ing into a business in which they might
now be making an independent living.—
California Fruit Grower.
Marc Antony’s quondom better half,
Miss Cleopatra. Sara claims she was
slender, while Fanny says she was in-
clined to embonpoint. This is an inter-
esting point, but it appears to us that
Bernhardt ought to know what she is
talking about, having been a contempo-
rary of Cleopatra’s.
And Sara carries the bone With her.
Orange Tribune: Has the legislature
ever passed the bill appropriating money
to pay us poor editors who had to trust
the state when we published the
commission and road law amendments;
we want our money and we want it bad.
Take your pay in railway commission
palaver; laugh, and grow fat.
Augusta (Ga.) Evening News: The
tales of the horrible cruelty practiced
upon Hungarian miners in West Vir-
ginia turns out to be, as everyone knew,
a hoax. The miners themselves run the
town to suit them, and there is no one
able or willing to oppress them. They
make money, get drunk and have a good
time generally.
The dispatch was so palpable a fraud
upon its face that Evening Tribune did
not publish it.
FortWorth Gazette: California joins
the procession by appropriating $300,000
to a 'World’s Fair exhibit; but the mem-
bers of the Texas legislature are uncon-
scientiously afraid that such an appro-
priation is contrary to the views of the
agriculturist and contravens the ten
commandments.
If the reports be true, the members
break those ten commandments every
day. Why not do it for the general good
of the state instead of personal benefit?

A Wonder Worker.
Mr. Frank Huffman, a young'man of
Burlington, Ohio, states that he had
been under the care of two prominent
physicians and used their treatment un-
til he was not able to get around. They
p: onounced his case to be Consumption
ard incurable. He was persuaded to try
Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consump-
tion, Coughs and Colds, and at that time
was not able to walk across the street
without resting. He found before he
had used half of a dollar bottle that he
was much better. He continued to use
it, and is today enjoying good health. If
you have any Throat, Lung or Chest
Trouble try it. We guarantee satisfac-
tion. Trial bottle free at J. J. Schott’s

The commissioners who selected Al-
giers as the point for the new federal
drydock give the reason for their choice
that at no point on the Texas coast
could they find twenty-five feet of water.
It will be at least five years, or perhaps
more, before the drydock will be com-
pleted. Before that time Galveston, and
perhaps a couple of other points on the
gulf coast, will have more than twenty-
five feet of water. The reason assigned
by the commissioners is not a sensible
one.
