Phillips, Wis., is ;i prattrical demon-
stration of tbe energy, pluck and enter-
prise which have dorro so much to build-
ing up thriving towns in the great north-
west during the last few years.
On Friday. July 27, 1&C4, thu city cf
Phillips was entirely destroyed by fire.
Thirteen of its residents were burned
to death or drowned, and $1,500,000
worth of property was destroyed. Every
business house in tin? city was reduced
to ashes, and bet very few houses of
any kind were left unscathed. Twenty-
five hundred people were left homeless
in a day, and nundrwls of them were
left with no earthly possess ions except-
ing the clothes on their backs. The de-
struction of the city was accomplished
