De Leon Mayor Scottie Campbell
has issued the following
proclamation in honor of Employ
The Older Worker Week:
“By the year 2000, it is estimated
that our country will have the
largest and oldest labor force in its
history.
In order to meet the future
employment needs, America’s
employeesmust begin to more
readily recognize and benefit from
the experience and skills brought to
the labor market by older workers.
Through organizations such as
Texas Farmers Union Green
Thumb, older workers have the
opportunity to demonstrate their
unquestionable value as productive
members of today’s workforce. The
experience, ability, and wisdom of
our older workers must be
maintained and supported by
gainful employment opportunities.
THEREFORE, I, C. S. Campbell,
Mayor or De Leon, do here by
proclaim the week of MARCH 12-18,
1989, as Employ The Older Worker
Week in De Leon.
I urge all employers, both public
and private, to profit from
experience-hire an older Texan! ”

the chili and crackers. As she made
the exchange she noticed paint all
over Mr. Skaggs hands.
“Been painting something?”
she inquired with scant interest.
“I been painting’ a sign.” Byron
admitted, and he stated the truth;
the sign stood in a field at his place.
It said: “Don’t walk on the grass-
my peanuts are under there.”
Mr. White finished his Coke, stood
and deposited one lone copper
cent beside the empty bottle.
“Cokes are a nickel! ” the waitress
reminded him:
“You said you’d take my last
penny for a Coke,” he reminded,
“and that’s it ” He left the cafe.
Byron Skaggs finished his stew
and seemed to enjoy it immensely,
but he was opening the door to ex
when he was challenged.
“Byron, you didn’t pay for your
stew?”
“Don’t owe for it-I swapped chili
for the stew!”
“Well O.K., but you didi.’t pay for
the ch?? ’ she reminded.
“Course not,” he responded,
“and I didn’t eat it neither!”

Once upon a time, you could have
whizzed down the middle of main
street toward the north, and if you’d
not varied your direction, you’d a
run smack into Denman Alexander’s
cafe. Luckily, no one did-at least
while my mama was cooking there.
Mr. White came in, plopped down
on a stool and my mom went over to
take his order.
“Would you take a man’s last
penny for a Coke?” He asked
wearily.
“You bet! ” she replied and set one
before him, as Byron Skaggs
entered and found a seat.
“I’ll take a bowl of that chili,”
Jyron placed his order. When his
chili and bushel of crachers arrived,
Byron detected another delectable
odor permeating that eating
establishment.
“Whassit I smell?” he asked.
“Stew.”
“How much is it?”
“Four bits.”
“How much is this chili?”
"Four bits.”
“Can I swap this chili for stew?”
“Sure,” the waitress brought a
steaming bowl of stew and removed

National Employ The Older
Worker Week Is March 12-18
Green Thumb, a senior community
service employment program,
funded by the Department of Labor,
encourages both public and private
sector employers to join them in
acknowledging the important
contributions older workers provide
to our state and nation.
Joe Rankin, President of Texas
Farmers Union, which sponsors
Green Thumb, urges employers “to
utilize an abundance of talent,
resourcefulness, and experience by
hiring senior Texans.” Programs
such as Green Thumb assist older
workers in improving their
employment futures through job
placement with public and private
employers throughout rural Texas.
“We at Farmers Union take very
special pride in our affiliation with
Green Thumb, which currently
provides part-time employment and
training for over 1,100 program
enrollees in 129 Texas counties,” he
said.
Texas Farmers Union Green
Thumb places program enrollees
age 55 and older with local non-
profit organizations to provide
needed manpower services in such
areas as senior centers, day care
and headstart programs, schools,
public works, weatherization,
libraries, and municipalties.
“During National Employ the
Older Worker Week, and every other
week, Texas employers should
utilize one of our state’s most
valuable resources-the older
worker. Hire experience,
