Watch For
Pecan Nut
Casebearer
The first significant entry of the
pecan nut casebearer is predicted to
occur May 30. This means you need
to be looking for eggs now, said
David L. Tunmire, County
Extension Agent-Agriculture.
The adult moth deposits the eggs
on the tips of the nutlets The newly
laid eggs are greenish white in color
and are just visible to the naked eye.
The egg will turn brown before the
larva hatches. The larva hatches
from the egg in four to five days.
Nut entries can be easily seen by
the bits of fraas and webbing
projecting from entered nuts. A
single larva can destroy several of
the nutlets in a cluster.

Victims of the spring flooding,
tornadoes and storms may receive

Harris said homeowners in
disaster-declared counties may be

uninsured losses or the deductible

Agricultural producers may be
eligible for two emergency
assistance programs as a result of
the April 25 flooding, but the
assistance is very limited, said
David L. Tunmire, County
Extension Agent-Ag. The programs
are being offered through the
Farmers Home
(FmHA)* and
Stabilization and
Service (ASCS).
FmHA has available disaster
emergency loans. This means that
producers who have lost at least 30
percent of their production due to
adverse weather are eligible for
FmHA loans. Proceeds from crop
insurance or other support
programs will be considered when
determining eligibility. Producers
interested in receiving an
emergency loan are urged to apply
as soon as possible. The FmHA
office is located at FM 3381 in
Comanche and their telephone
number is 915/356-522.

(left) a Mirabeau B. Lamar Excellence in Education Award. Mrs. Priddy is
the first teacher to receive this coveted award in De Leon. She has taught in
public schools 20 years. Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the
Republic of Texas, was the father of public education. During his
administration, he was the first person to start dedicating public lands for
~ public education. As a result of his initial efforts, over two million acres of
public land was dedicated for public education. He began this program so
counties could help create and fund public schools for the children of Texas.
This is the Armstrong Lodge’s first time to honor a teacher with an Award of
