Property Tax Protest And Appeal Procedures
The law gives property owners the right to
protest actions concerning their property tax
appraisals. You may follow these procedures
if you have a concern about:
"the value placed on your property;
*exemptions that may apply to you;
"cancellation of agricultural appraisal;
"whether your property is taxable;
"which local governments should be taxing
your property; or
"you think the appraisal district has done
something else that adversely affected you.
INFORMAL REVIEW:
Taxpayers are encouraged to contact the
Appraisal District and discuss their property
value if they feel it is incorrect. They may
come by the District’s office at No. 1 Huett
Circle, Comanche, Texas, or call the office at
915-356-5253. They should submit informa-
tion as to why they feel their property value is
incorrect. The appraisal District will consider
this information and if any adjustment is neces-
sary, will recommend it to the Appraisal Re-
view Board (ARB). If the taxpayer is satis-
fied with the adjustment, he does not have to
appear before the ARB.
REVIEW BY THE APPRAISAL
REVIEW BOARD:
If you can’t resolve your problem informally
with the appraisal district staff, you may have
your case heard by the appraisal review board.
The appraisal review board (ARB) is an
independent board of citizens that reviews
problems with appraisals and other concerns
listed above. They have the power to order
the appraisal district to make the necessary
changes to solve problems. If you file a writ-
ten request for an ARB hearing (called a no-
tice of protest) before the deadline, the ARB
will set your case for a hearing. You’ll re-
ceive written notification of the time, date, and
place of the hearing. The hearing will be in-
formal You and the appraisal district repre-
sentative will be asked to present evidence
about your case. The ARB will make its de-
cision based on the evidence presented. You
can get a copy of a protest form from the ap-
praisal district office at No. 1 Huett Circle,
Comanche, Texas.
Note: You shouldn’t try to contact the ARB
members outside of the hearing. The law re-
quires you to sign an affidavit saying that you
haven’t done so before the ARB hears your
case.
REVIEW BY THE DISTRICT COURT:
After it decides your case, the ARB must
send a copy of its order by certified mail. If
you’re not satisfied with the decision you have
the right to appeal to district court. If you
