"It wasn't long after the tor-
nado struck that our spirits were
good," said Daryl Tucker "We
had positive attitude because no
one was killed, the town rallied
and came together, and there
were hundreds of volunteers
from everywhere you can imag-
ine. The spirits of the people
were good."
"But then when Lynn died it
just changed the whole situation.
That was a big blow. It was a big
blow that made the disaster a
whole lot worse."
"I bet I've talked to 20 other
people and they all have said the
same tiling," Tucker said. "The
attitude of people just changed."
Indeed. The devastation caus-
ed by the storm increased by an
order of magnitude with the
death of Lynn Ellis, 62, on
Wednesday, April 25, 2007
He was born Oct 7, 1944, to
Horace and Hazel Ellis. He was
raised in Tulia and graduated
from Tulia High School in 1963.
Mr. Ellis married the former Joy
Boone on Sept 5, 1969.
He tried college, found that it
wasn't for hi in, and returned to
Tulia. He began what would be-
come a lifetime of employment
in the tire business. He worked
in the tire shop of his uncle John
&& •
EH
in 1968 opened his own shop,
Swisher Tire, with his first
cousin Don Young for a partner
"John Young was our mutual
uncle and Lynn learned a lot
from him because they worked
together," Don Young said
"Much later in life, though,
Lynn said his father was always
teaching, he just didn't realize
it at the time."
In 1976 they purchased Young
& Ellis, a fuel distributor The
company had been founded in
1943 by their fathers. Guy
Young and Horace Ellis The
sons kept the name and today
Young & Ellis is one of Swisher
County's oldest businesses under
continuous family ownership
The firm now has 64 years un-
der its belt.
Su Harland has worked at
Young & Ellis for 18 years.
"Lynn was a wonderful boss,
and both Lynn and Joy were
good friends to me. He loved his
family and had the most won-
derful marriage. They were best
friends He was a very giving
person "
"I never had a brother, and a
lot of times he would give me
brotherly advice that helped me
get by a little better He was more
like a brother than a boss "
Lynn Ellis always had an in-
terest in sports and even had
coached a Little League baseball
team He was a strong supporter
of the Athletic Booster Club
"He was always willing to sup-
port the community," Tucker
said "He was always at the
games regardless. Anytime you
asked for something for the
booster club he was always will-
ing to do things. Lots of times
he was a behind the scenes kind
of person, always doing things
that people didn't sec but that
made a big difference. He would
always help out in every way he
could."
"He did a lot of good things
for a lot of people that most
people will never know about,"
Tucker said
Glenda Gibson and Lynn Ellis
were active in the Booster Club
during some of the same years.
"Lynn was at every ball game
and it didn't matter if the
weather was good or bad," she
said "It also didn't matter if his
son was playing or not Lynn was
always there, and every kid out
there was 'his'"
"He was a sweet guy who was
invested in our community,"
Gibson said
Mr Ellis was named Athletic
Booster of the Year in 1997, and
served as vice president of the
club in 1999-00 and 2000-01.

How Does FEMA Rate?
As of May 13, there are 157 cases registered with FEMA, and 74 people
have visited the recovery center. $41,100 has been given in housing grants
and $550 has been given in other-needs assistance grants. One trailer has
been delivered and nine more are on the way.
"On the 20th day after the civic state of emergency, FEMA placed the first
trailer. This is because Swisher County and Tulia civic leaders have allowed
FEMA to move quickly through their cooperation, dedicated effort, and strong
interest," said Kim Pease, FEMA public information officer.
