The subjugation of substance and the harress-
ing of the elements and making them faithful, re-
liable and obedient senants to mankind has been
the crowning event of our civilization, but our
road improvements have not kept pace i* ith our ad-
vancement in motive power. Build good roads and
keep up the procession.
The Chinese emb^^ador at Washington has
formally announced the existence of the new re-
public. The name is Ching Hwa, whfch is Chi-

few differences, is modelled after that of the Uni-
ted States cf America.

Last Sunday a number of boys v-ere observed
on top of the tank on the new water *.ower. It is
good to s?e boys brave and venturesome, but high
climbing is dangerous, and they are advised not to
rej>eat the trick. The pitcher that goes too often
to the well is broken at last, and some boy may
climb once too often, become suddenly dizzy, or
make a cnance slip and be precipitated to the
ground. Then some bright and lovely Sunday
morning some dear little bey will tie laid away un-
der the beautiful snowy daisies, and some, parents
will be mourning, perhaps, for their first born.
Show your faith iu diversified farming by
planting several crops, giving preference to those
that furnish food for the familj’ table and feed for
animals on the farm.
There is always room for one me re, but to get
iu on the ground floor you will have to come early.
With increased knowledge of the constituent
elements of the soil, improved farming implements
and, withall, a greater pride iu achievement, the
possibilities of reward for the farmer are greater
than ever before.
The reason why you do not see any good
and beauty in the world, is because you have got a
grouch on and are blind. Why, man, there is
beauty standing about in gobbs all around you,
yours to enjoy without money and without price
and, as for goodness, most people are a great deal
better thin they get credit for. If you will quit
going about with your eyes shut and view things
as they really are, you will find that most of the
ugliness and meanness was in yourself.
We have our choice for president, and there is
pleasure in speculating as to who will get the dem-
ocratic a ad republican nominations, but just now
it is much more interesting to speculate about when
this winter weather is going to break up.
The * are two sides to every question, and when
you ht .i the other side, things sometimes appear
quite different. Hear both sides and then pass
judgement. Don’t go off half cocked.
When home life in the country is surrounded

After a few days of lovely weather old Jupiter
Pluvius and that mean old rascal, Boreas, came
down on us agaiu Tuesday night and hit us anoth-

Well, we can’t help it, and have to stand it. If
our credit will continue to stretch and John Cow-
ard don’t run out of coal, maybe we can manage
to pull through but, oh Lord, don’t we wish the
winter would break!

Cleav .and was among the best and most level headed
presidents the country has had, and the fact he
selected Mr. Harmon as a member of his cabinet,
is an endorsement to recommend any man. Anoth-

complimentary to his worth and ability, is the neat
manner • n which he took the starch out of the re-
publicans in Ohio.
