“Therefore My Father loves
Me, because I lay down My
life that I may take it again. No
one takes it from Me, but I lay
it down of Myself. I have power
to lay it down, and I have power
to take it again. This command
we can-

Our home is nestled on a
quiet cul-de-sac, and we have
lived there for many years. I re-
ally like the walkway that leads
past several windows to our
front door. But there are bushes
that line the windows and can
obscure the view, so that when
someone comes up the walk, it
is hard to tell who it is.
Now, a few years ago we add-
ed a storm door to enjoy the sun-
shine and not feel so much like
shut-ins. But it has also served
another purpose; we can keep it
locked so that when a stranger
comes to the door we have some
kind of defense in place to iden-
tify them more clearly before we
allow them in.
Most of you have some kind
of security system in place in
your own homes. Alarms. Cam-
eras.
I doubt that even the most
“humane” person leaves their
doors and windows open wide
and themselves or families vul-
nerable to any passersby.
I do think it is sad that evil re-
sides in the hearts of people, and
we have to have these security
checks in place. I love people,
but I am not foolish to believe
that all people have good inten-
tions towards me.

They each serve staggered
terms, in accordance with a city
ordinance.
Now that Smith has been ap-
pointed, she will serve out the
remainder of her 2017 term and
may apply for reappointment in
December, if the councilmen ap-
prove her again.
At the beginning of the year,
James Shepherd, who is a paid
part-time attendant at the Senior
Center, had shown interest in the
unexpired term after he submit-
ted a consent and willingness to
serve form. However, city coun-
cilmen agreed with City Manag-
er Sereniah Breland that it could
be construed as a conflict of in-
terest because of his paid posi-
tion as a city employee.
In late January, council unani-
mously agreed to wait for ad-
ditional people to apply for
Maust’s vacated post.
The city had advertised for the
position on its social media ac-
counts, including acknowledg-
ment of a vacated spot on the
city of Alvin’s Senior Citizens
Board page.

Council
unanimously approved the ap-
pointment of Alvin resident Lo-
retta Smith on the Alvin Senior
Citizen Board during a regular
meeting, March 2.
The decision comes after
Brenda Maust vacated her seat
in January 2017.
Her term went through De-
cember 2017 after being ap-
pointed in December 2015.
Smith, who is retired from the
Harris County District Attor-
ney’s Office, will fill in during
that time.
She was present when coun-
cilmen made their decision.
This will be the first time that
the Alvin resident of 15 years
has served on an Alvin board or
commission.
However, she has volunteered
for the Gathering Place (Al-
zheimer’s); was a past board
member for the Alvin Food Pan-
try; past president of Disciples

On a personal level, Smith

“I think my life will be en-
riched by serving on the Senior
Citizens Board. It will provide
mental stimulation to make me
feel involved and relevant, al-
lowing me to make friends and
broaden my social network, and
give back to the community,”
Smith said.
The board meets monthly and
discusses issues pertaining to the
Senior Center, as well as activi-
ties for senior citizens in Alvin.
Smith submitted a consent
