great-grandmother of Zane Ber-
ner, Scarlett Bemer and Jude
Berner. Lila is also survived by
her lifelong friend, Sue Massey
Niehart.
Lila was raised in Alvin, Tex-
as, where she graduated from
Alvin High School. Lila attend-
ed both the University of Texas
and Texas Women’s University.
Lila joined the Houston Po-
lice Department in 1960 and
was the 11th female officer hired
by HPD. Lila was first assigned
to the Juvenile Division where
she met Frederick, the love of
her life. She then transferred to
the Forgery Division where she
became one of the first females
promoted to detective. She then
served for 10 years in her posi-
tion with the Harris County Or-
ganized Crime Unit. She then
rounded out her 30 years of
service to the Houston Police
Department in the Burglary and
Theft unit. Lila was proud to
have served as a policewoman in
a field that had been reserved for
men in the years before women
like her led the way for those
that would later follow.
Lila and Fred raised their two
sons in Alvin, Texas. She and
Fred enjoyed taking the family
to many historical sites, which
instilled a love of history in both
r
her sons. They visited histori-
cal sites throughout the South
and Southwest including: Wash-
ington D.C., Revolutionary
War and Civil War battles sites
and Pueblo Indian mins in the
Southwest. They also traveled
extensively throughout Mexico
visiting Aztec, Mayan, Toltec
and Mixtec mins.
Lila and Fred retired to the
West Texas Hill Country outside
Vanderpool. They purchased a
piece of land and built a small
one-bedroom home that sits at
the juncture of two creeks. A few
years later they built their dream
home on the same property. Lila
enjoyed the outdoors. She loved
the flora and fauna of the West
Texas Hill Country. She mar-
veled at the beauty of the clear
water and the cedar trees. Lila
and Fred were welcomed by
their many new friends in the
Hill Country and were made
to feel right at home. Lila was
always thankful for that. Lila
and Fred enjoyed working on
their property and going on long
walks together. They also spent
many years traveling together,
visiting family and friends and
collecting antiques along the
way. Lila felt fortunate to have
had an extended retirement of 28
years. She loved her family and
friends dearly.
A viewing was held at Grimes

as, on Wednesday, December
