Rep. Ed Thompson spoke
about what he thinks is ahead
for the 85th Legislature that he
would like to be a part of if vot-
ers in the upcoming November
election agree that he is still the
person to represent them in the
29th District in the Texas House
of Representatives.
He spoke to an audience of
the monthly Alvin Manvel Area
Chamber of Commerce at the
Knights of Columbus Hall, in
Alvin, Aug. 9, and said trans-
portation issues regarding SH 36
are critical pieces of the District
29 puzzle.
Thompson, whose district in-
cludes Pearland, Manvel and
Alvin, mentioned how transpor-
tation issues in Freeport, west-
ward along SH 36 to Rosenberg,
would affect the SH 288 corri-
dor here for the better.
“State Highway 36 is not in
our district but it’s important
because a lot of the traffic uses
this corridor and go up 288; it’s a
very critical piece,” said Thomp-
son, who is a former Pearland
city councilman.
Transportation was one of
the topics he discussed because
it’s a topic that he often hears
being raised by residents he
meets. And, he didn’t sugarcoat
the Holy Spirit. Now I can read
the Old Testament with a better
appreciation of how God’s awe-
some plan of salvation for His
creation came to pass, and I can
see Jesus throughout those pages
which were a shadow of things
to come. Every spoken word of right hand in the heavenly plac-
God is correct and relevant for
today, but we must “rightly di-
vide the word of truth” between
the Old Covenant and New Cov-
enant.
I’d like to encourage you that
if you ever find yourself stuck
in a mental rut when it comes to
reading and understanding the
Bible - pray!
Pray, and ask God to open up (I’m borrowing this next state-

whole view; to bring into focus
who He is and how much He
loves each one of us.
A long time ago I started pray-
I am going back to the future
with this column, and when I
wrote this several years ago it
was in my heart as an encour-
agement to anyone who wants
to experience real change, from
within. That’s where it all be-
gins, because the best is yet to
come.
I got stuck in a traffic jam
the other day. My vehicle was
surrounded by large trucks so
I couldn’t see what the actual
hold up was. But, once again, I
used the time wisely:
First I picked up the trash in
the seat, rifled through expired
coupons in the console, wiped
a layer of dust off the dash, ad-
justed the mirrors with precision
care, picked at a piece of worn-
out foam on the steering wheel
and chased the last cube of ice
around a cup with my straw.
(Oh, yeah, I’m all about priori-
tizing time with productive re-
sults.)
Later I was at a drive-thru in
that same area. The cashier at
the window stuck her head out
as she handed me my drink and
asked, “Are they still tearing ev-
erything up out there?”
From this new direction that I
was facing I had a much better
understanding of what was actu-
ally taking place, that the whole
road was under construction, in-
stead of just mass confusion.
“Yep,” I replied, “but it’ll be
okay when it’s done. They are
just ripping up the old road and
laying down a whole new one.”
You know, in a way, that is how
I used to see the Bible. I could
never make heads or tails out of
it at the time. “It was veiled to
me” because I didn’t know the

Person who it was written about.
I was taught respect and rever-
ence for it and some of the sto-
ries were exciting to hear about
when our Sunday school teacher
read them to us.
So when I was about 12 years
old I made a solemn vow to read
a chapter of the Bible every
night before bedtime, starting
with Genesis.
The first night I fell asleep at
the beginning. No. Seriously.
On the first page. “In the begin-
ning ...” ZZZZZZZZZ ...”
As I recall I broke my vow
completely in less than a week,
losing all interest around Chap-
ter five. So you see, it’s a good
thing that God created the world
because, were it left up to me, I
would have given up on the fifth
day. I had no clue what I was
reading so I simply got bored
and moved on to other things.
But I believe it had a lot to do
with the way it was presented
to us. A list of rules and regula-
tions, do’s and don’t’s instead of
transformation through relation-
ship and restoration.
Of course, much has changed
since I opened my heart up to
receive Jesus as my Lord and
Savior. From that very moment,
I wanted to know everything

I could about this Person who
demonstrated His love toward
all who would believe and re-
ceive Him. And I wanted to be
just like Jesus. To follow Him
because He changed my heart.
(The word Christian means “lit-
tle Christ.”)
So I began reading the Bible
again. This time I chose to start powerful, so I’m going to share
in the New Testament with John, them again, and I strongly sug-
then Matthew, Luke and Mark, gest that you personalize them!
For several years I stayed in the Put your name in and read it out
New Testament, being discipled
under the right teaching and get-
ting alone/developing a relation- Jesus Christ, the Father of glo-
ship with Father God. And find- ry, may give to you (______) the

and think that I should have

Bible, but I had to break away
