Eddy and Janie Whitaker — celebrate 50 years together —
'From whence we have come1
Brazoria County Commissioners Court presented a proclamation
declaring September as National Recovery Month in Brazoria
County. The National Recovery Month theme is “Join the Voices
of Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose and Community.”
Recovery Month observance helps spread the message that
behavioral health is essential to health and one’s overall wellness
and that prevention works, treatment is effective and people do
recover. (Courtesy photo)

OFF
We met in Lubbock, Texas, in July 1969.
Although our brothers had become friends in their
senior year of high school, we did not know each
other. Eddy was recovering from surgery at that
time and could not drive. He was riding around
with Janie’s brother one day and happened to see
Janie’s picture on a wall of the living room of her
mother’s home. He promptly recognized the fact
that he must meet this young beauty. Then one
fate-prompted day, Janie stopped by Eddy’s house
to drop off his brother. Eddy needed a ride to the
local Hi D Ho (the local drive-in where kids hung
out). Janie offered to take him to the Hi D Ho, so
now the flame is kindled.
We talked on the phone a few times and then
began to date. All the while, Janie strangely forgot
to mention that she was kind of engaged to some
guy that was (fortunately) in Korea at the time.
By September of that fateful year, we were
engaged. And on November 7, 1969, we married.
The rest, as they say, is history. Through 50 years
of togetherness, we have continued to build on
our loving relationship through good times and
tough times. We were blessed with two very
wonderful children - a boy named Zane and a girl
named Nikki - and then blessed again with a
wonderful grandchild, Kimberly, whom we adore.
They all do us great honor. Our immensely
gracious Lord God in Heaven has richly blessed
us, and we desire that He receive all the praise for
the good that may have come forth.
