Thomas Cox
Thomas Cox died in his apart-
ment in Alvin of natural causes -
the exact time is not known. He
was born in a West Texas town
on the Rio Grande River on or
about October 26, 1950. When
he was a teenager he committed
to being a Catholic monk. For
six and one half years he lived as
a monk in a Catholic monastery
and took the various religious
vows as in a vow of silence and
a commitment to serving others
- a monk’s function is to be of
service to others.
He told me that one interest-
ing practice was that he and
six other monks had to sleep in
wooden caskets. This practice
was to emphasize the awareness
that life is but a temporary con-
dition lasting for but a moment
and can end at any second for
anyone.
He said that if they came in
the morning and found you
dead, they had only to close the
lid and dig a hole.
His life changed when he
was in his early twenties and
they found that he had stomach
cancer. They removed all of
the cancer they could and told
him they could not heal him.
His doctor told him that he had
only eleven months to live. His
doctor could not believe that he
did live and called him to check
on him for years. He figured he
had outlived his doctor when he
quit calling. His experience with

out of Alvin and seeing other

he was a man with a good heart.

the hospital showed him how he
could best serve his fellow man
- by becoming a male nurse. He
moved to Austin and earned a
Master’s Degree in Nursing at
the University of Texas.
He served at the Catholic hos-
pital where he had his cancer op-
eration for over 40 years.
It was there that he met a lady
nurse who was 20 years his se-
nior and they married. He said
they were married for over 20
years, and it was a wonderful
thing. Then she got cancer and
died. I think that pretty much
knocked the slats out from him.
Having lost my own wife sev-
eral years ago to cancer, I asked
him how long it takes to get over
that experience. He gave me the
same exact answer as I had got-
ten from two other men with
similar experiences. He said:
“You do not get over it!”
Eventually he moved to Alvin,
got an apartment and worked
at the Senior Citizens Center.
He still continued to live like a
monk, having one comfortable
chair, a small old TV, a dining
table to put junk on, including a
few books, and as far as I could
tell he slept on the floor (not in
a casket). I understand that he
had a Volvo but he gave it to
somebody that he felt needed
it more than he did. He had no
telephone, no computer and no
microwave as his had burned up.
I did not know him long and I
did not know him well, but I did
know that he did enjoy getting
