F production picture at the turn of th**
bar But the strike changed all that. As you
how, the CIO United Farm Equipment &
B' tal Workers of Amenta called a strike in
bn of our plants, on January 21, 1946.
What Is The SMke About?
fages arc a basic issue. At the time of th*

iiRhest paid workers in American industry,
phen the strike began, the average hourly
earnings in the ten plant not including
overtime were If present v tge pro-
posals ate adopted, this figure will become
$1,334 per hour
When the strike b can, negotiations were
broken off by the Union on the issue of com-
pulsory union menilx rstup. Ti e Company
has no deair* to weaken the Union It rrxsjf-
nizn* certain reasonable m-eda of tlie Union.
But the Company does oppose compul^try
unionism. It feels strongly that an em-
ploye's membership should be a matter of
his own choice.
Matvr al Cott* and Pries Relief
Wage* and materials are the great costs of
operating our business—-together they con-
sume all but a few rente of every dollar the
Company takes in. Wages art obviously
going to be high and nobody knows just
how high material costa will go.
In the lace of rising coats of matenal». the
Company does not we how it can pay the
wage increase* recommended by a Govern-
ment fai t finding hoard until it has definite
and satisfactory assurance from the Govern-
ment that reasonable price relief will be
granted tu the Company within a reasonable
puriud of lime. Thi» matter is of such im-
portance that it will not be discusaed here,
hut will be covered by future advertisements
devoted to both prices ind profits.
Speaking for our dealers and ourselves, we
can assure you that no customer is more
r than we are to resume production We
are doins and shall continue to do everything
in our power to bring about a fair settlement
as soon aa possible.
