Description

Exterior view of the front of the City of Denton Civic Center. The "community center" was designed by Texas architect, O'Neil Ford. The grand opening ceremony was held on November 18, 1867, and an open house was held that Saturday and Sunday. Interestingly, the Denton Record-Chronicle referred to the building as the "Denton Mini-Dome", although the structure was not a dome, but built like a bicycle wheel with a cable-suspension roof. Denton's first public library opened on June 6, 1937, in Denton County Courthouse. It quickly outgrew the space and in 1949, the City of Denton donated a tract of land on Oakland Street for a new library.
