RAPE DELICACY—-For those who like avocados, there
nothing with quite such a delicate flavor . . . but it IS
a bit odd to find fhem growing profusely in fhe Alvin
area Lots of folks have avocado trees but few of
them bear! Charles Green stands beside one of several
at his Sidnor Street home and all of them are loaded
with fruit this year. Green said his sister, Mrs. Jim
Shane, started the trees from seed about 15 years ago.
They froze back eight years ago and have come out,
now, from the old roots. "The trees had lots of blooms
last year but the snow nipped them, Green said.
"They’ve been bearing most years for about five years
but never like they are this year." Green said he did
nothing special to the trees to make them bear. I just
trim them and let them grow, he said. He added
however, that he stayed out all day last year when it
snowed, hosing the snow off the heavy limbs to keep
them from breaking. Green couldn’t even esbmate
what his avocado crop might total this year but he
said one branch by the kitchen window was so heavy
with fruit that he had to give it added strength by
roping it up.
The request took Commissioners j{afrison again asked for the raise
