whereupon it may be moved to a new posi-
5 tion for a fresh operation. It vill be seen
that this device is very convenient,, and fur-
ther that by its use rails may be positioned
more quickly than by the use of an ordinary
gage bar and with greater accuracy. The
1o ends of the bars 14 and 18 are hook shaped
in order to engage over the rail and keep
the gage from slipping off the rail. This
device is also capable of forcing bent rails
into position after the rails have become
15 spread or distorted or may be used for lay-
ing new rails.' With this gage, one man is
able to do the work of two or three men-
working in the usual manner..
-lHaving described, my invention, what 1
20 claim is:-
1. A track gage comprising. a body hav-
ing a fixed rail engaging bar extending
from one end and adapted to engage over
one rail of a track, a longitudinally shift-
25 able rail engaging bar mounted: 'upon the
body .and adapted to engage over another
rail of the track, manually operable means
for shifting the shiftable bar toward the
fixed bar, and a longitudinally shiftable-
30 gage bar mounted upon the body and hav-
ing ends adapted to be abutted against the
rails of the track.
2. A track gage comprising a body hav-
ing a fixed. rail engaging bar extendingCopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents+
from one end and adapted to engage around 35
one rail of a track, a longitudinally shift-
able rail engaging bar extending from the
other end of the body and adapted to engage
around the other rail of a track, manually
operable.means for shifting the last.named 40
rail engaging bar toward the first named
rail engaging, bar, and a sliding gage bar
mounted upon the body and adapted to be
abutted at its ends against the, rails of the

3. A track gage, comprising..a bodyhav-
ing a bar fixed' thereto. and extending. from
one. end thereof. and formed with- a down-
wardly. and' inwardly turned hook adapted
to engage beneath= the. head: of a. il a lon- 50
gitudinally- shiftable track engaging- bar
mounted upon the body and extending. froni
its. other end and having a- downwardly, ex-
tending hook adapted' to' engage over the
head' of a rail; manually operable means for 55
shifting the last named bar toward or from
the first named bar, and: a: sliding gage-bar
mounted upon the.body below the' shiftable
track engaging bar and; having its, ends
