UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. WARREN, OF LUEIN, PEXAS.
PLOW..1,282,((6;1.
-Specifcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1918.
Application fild IMarch;14, 19:18. Serial No. 222386..
To all witowo it may concern:
l3e it known that I, JoHN ,T. WARREN, a
citizen -of the United -States, residing .at
Lufkin, iiithe county of Angelina and State
5 of Texas, have invented a new and useful
Plow, of which the following is a specifica-
tion.
This invention relatesto improvements -in
plows.
10 The object is to provide a plow structure
of improved strength and durability where-
in means are ;provided for changing or ad-
justing the angularity of the plow;stock,
with relation to the plow beam, so as to
15 render the plow point, carried iby said stock,
capable of plowing the soil deeper or shal-
lower,.as desired.
Another. object is to provide means, in
the -form of a colter carried by the plow
20 stock, for preventing the plow point from
following a zig-zag path :through the soil
while plowing, said means -being capable of
adjustment for causing -the :same ,to Lpene-
trate the soil at a greater or lesser depth,
25 and .being also capable of being swung -up-
wardly and out .of contact with the soil,
when it is not desired,;to use the same, or
for the purpose of facilitating the applica-
tion of the plow point or shovel, or for more
so readily applying;the heel :sweeps.
A further object is to improve :the means
for attaching the said;point and:sweeps,'so
that the entire strain incident to their usage,
will not be brought upon -the heel bolt, but
35 will be partially imparted to novel locking
means which effectually prevent any :loos-
ening of. the said point-orsweeps.
A still further:object.is:to provide means
for adjusting -the plow handles to suit;the
40 convenience.-or ,comfort of the operator, and
to so protect and :strengthen :the movable
parts of these adjustable features as :to re-
duce wear and danger.of -breakage to a
minimum.
45 A full and complete understanding of the
invention may be obtained from aconsid-
eration of the following detailed-description,
taken in connection with the accompanying
drawing forming a part . of this specifica-
50 tion; it being understood .that while the
drawing shows a. practical'form rof the -n-
vention, 'the latter is not confined to strict
conformity therewith, but may be -changed
or modified, so long as such changes or
55 modifications mark no material .departurefrom the salient features of the ;invention,
as :specificall-y pointed out in the appended
claims.
In the drawing,.in which like reference
characters designate similar parts ,through- 60
out the several figures:-
Figure 1 ;is a side elevation of the im-
proved plow, the handles and beam being
only :partially shown.
Fig. ;2 is a. longitudinal sectional view 65
thereof, 'the beam and colter being shown
in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section,
taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. .is .a detail sectional view, taken 70
on -the 'line 4--A of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a substantially :horizontal sec-
tionp view, taken on the line 5-5. of {ig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the
plow stock. 75
Fig. 7 ,is a detailperspective view of the
heel sweep.
Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of one
of the-clamp members for:the handles.
.Fig. 9;is a detail perspective view of one 80
form of plow point.
Fig. -10 is a similar view of another;form
of ;point.
Referring 'to the drawing, .there is illus-
trated a plow beam 1, which is formed of 85
wood -having the necessary strength to with-
stand the strain to which :plow beams are
subjected, :the . rear end of the same
being rounded and somewhat .:enlarged to
strengthen the same. 90
A pair of wear-plates 2-2-are.arranged,
one at either :side of the beam 1 and at the
enlarged'end -thereof, said wear plates fol-
lowing the contour of the beam .and being
formed of suitable: sheet metal, adapted to 95
lie flat against the sides of 'the beam and to
protect the same ;against wear Ifrom -certain
adjustable parts -to be later described. The
wear plates-2-2 are securely clamped to the
sides of the beam 1 by a series of bolts, one 100
of -which is bolt 3, located adjacent to the
front ends of the said plates and traverses
the plates and beam substantially at their
horizontal center lines.
A plow stock comprising a right and left 105
hand;memb r, 4 and 5 -respectively,, formed
ofmetal and having identical, opposed parts,
isadapted to be pivoted, at its upper end, to
the plow;beam, the said members 4 and.5 be-
ing outwardly flared, as indicated at 6, to 110
