Be it known that I, MCHAE A.I Kmut, a
citizen of the Tited States, residing at
Burkburnett, in the county of Wichita anti
5 State of Texas, have invented certain new
and useful Improvements in Pumps, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pumps and more
particularly to working barrels, packing
10 and packing chambers: and the. object is to
provide pumps with packing and packing
chambers therefor in combination with
working barrels in which many parts. such
as packing cups, and other easily worn
15 parts, are eliminated, and to provide pack-
ing chambers in which the packing will be
automatically maintained, and to provide
packing and packing chambers andlplun-
gers which will not he effected by sa(l or
20 dirt and other grinding or cutting particles
and also eliminate the frequent pulling of
rods to change. cups, and to provide pumps
which will he highly efficient in pumping
oil and other liquids. One of the advantages
25 of the improved pump is that the cutting of
the oil' will be largely prevented. Another
advantage is that the pressure of the liquid
usually attendant upon the pulling of the
plungers with their cups is prevented and
30 the consequent vacuum caused by lifting of
such cups is prevented. Other objects and
advantages will be fully explained in the
following description and the invention will
be more particularly pointed out in the
35 claim..
Reference is had to the accompanying
drawings which form a part of this applica-
tion.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a portion of
40 a working barrel and a packing chamber
and the packing therein. Fig. 2 is a broken
vertical section, illustrating the continua-
tion of the pumping barrel and casing
shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a broken vertical
45 section, qnk, a smaller scale, of the casing
shown ,in Fig. 2 and showing a check valve
therein'

This pump is provided with a packing
chamber 1 which has the lower end swaged
to reduce the same to the size of the casing
2 which is connected thereto by a collar 3.
55 A swaged collar 4 is screwed on the upperend of the packing chamber 1 and this re-
ducer -is connected to the casing 1 by a col-
lar 5. The working barrel 6 operates through
the packing chamber and through the pack-
ing 7 therein. A packing supporting ring 60
8 is mounted in the lower end of the pack-
ing chamber and supported therein by the
swaged end 9 of the packing, chamber. The
packing 7 is placed in the chamber 1 about
the working barrel 6 and a packing-con.. 65
pression ring 10 is placed on top of the
packing 7. Any pressure by liquid on the
ring 10 will be transmitted to the packing 7.
The pressure on the packing I7 will thus be
automatically maintained. A cup-shaned 70
(avity 11 is formed in the upper end of the
ring 10 about the barrel 6 to aid in forming
a seal about the barrel bX maintaining
liquid about the barrel during operation.
The approximately funnel shaped cavity 11 75
cooperates with the tapered member 12 of
the working barrel to make the projection
of the working barrel through the packing
7- easily accomplished. The pressure on the
packing 7 will expand the packing against 80
the barrel 6 and against the wall of the
chamber 1. The lower end 12 of the work-
ing barrel 6 is reduced to make the barrel
easily operative through the packing cham-
ber. The lower end of the working barrel 85
is connected to the main barrel by a screw
joint 13 and a valve seat 14 is formed in the
upper end of the section 15 of the pump bar-
rel. A check valve 16 is provided for the
pufp barrel and is adapted to engage the 90
seat 14 on the upstroke of the barrel. The
working barrel section 15 is provided with
openings 17 therethrough for relieving the
pressure. of the liquid in the casing 2 and in
the reducer 4 about the barrel 6. When 95
the openings 17 pass above, the ring 10,
the liquid in the casing 2 and the reducer 4
will pass down inside the member 15 and
thus relieve the pressure. on the barrel. A
coupling 18 connects the intake pipe 19 with 100
the casing 2. A valve 20 and cage 21 there-
for are provided and a pipe 22 forms a com-
munication between the intake pipe 19 and
the casing 2 through the valve seat of valve
20. In operation the liquid passes up through ios
the .intake pipe 19, thence through the
pipe 22 and past the valve 20 into the casing
2. The working barrel 6 with reduced end
12 takes the liquid from the casing 2. Va-
