28 terminating in an inwardly directed lug
29 loosely disposed through an adjacent bar
23. Inserted through the lug 29 inwardly
of the bar 23 is a cotter pin 30 or the like
5 whereby the bar 23 is maintained in opera-
tive relation relative to the lug 29. Directed
through the perforate head 26 of each of the
shanks 25 is a harrow tooth 31. The slant-
ing of the teeth 31 is of especial advantage in
10 foul land as the teeth 31 can be disposed on
such an angle as to prevent balling espe-
cially in a field having corn or cotton stalks.
Pivotally supported at opposite sides of
the beam 1 adjacent the rear end thereof are
15 the harrow teeth 32 which extend above the
beam 1. The upper end - portions of the
teeth 32 have pivotally engaged therewith
'the link or yoke 33' which is also pivotally
engaged with the rearwardly directed end
20 portion of the strap 19 whereby it will be at
once. self evident that the teeth 32 will be
moved in unison with and in the same gen-
eral direction as the teeth 31.
As before stated the member 2 provides
25 a means for securing my improved harrow
to a- cultivator or affords a suitable hitch.
When the device is in use independently of
the cultivator the handles H are employed.
As herein disclosed the inner end portions
30 of the handles H are secured to the upstand-
ing member 16' through the medium of a
removable bolt 33 or the like. Interposed
between the outer end portion of the handles
H and the rear end portion of the beam 1
35 are the brace members 34. The lower or
inner end portions of the brace members 34
are operatively engaged with the pivot bolt
35 of the teeth 32 and which bolt 35 is
readily removable. It will be at once self
40 evident that with the use of the removable
bolts 33 and 35 the handles H together with
the brace members 34 can be readily re-
moved when it is desired to attach my im:
proved harrow 'directly to a cultivator.
45 Each of the levers 12 and 14 is provided
with 'a conventional latch mechanism 36 co-
acting with a rack 37 suitably secured to the
rear end portion of the beam 1.
From the foregoing description, it is
50 thought to be -obvious that a harrow con-
structed in accordance with my invention is
particularly well adapted for use by reason
of the convenience and facility with which
it may be assembled and operated and it will
55 also be obvious that my invention is suscep-
tible of some change and modification with-
out materially departing from the appear-
ance and spirit.thereof and for this reason I
do not wish to be understood as limiting my-
60 self to the precise arrangement and forma-
tion of the several parts herein shown in
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cent!
Washingcarrying out my invention in practice except
as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A harrow comprising a central beam, a 65
cross member secured to the forward end
portion thereof, -a side beam pivotally en-
gaged with each end portion of the cross
member, a plurality of shanks disposed
transversely of each of the side beams and 70
capable of rotary movement, upstanding
rock arms carried by the shanks, a bar oper-
atively engaged with each of said rock arms,
teeth depending from the shanks, and means
co-acting with said bar for imparting rock- 75
ing movement to the shanks.
2. A harrow comprising a central beam, a
cross member secured to the forward end
portion thereof, a side beam pivotally en-
gaged with each end portion of the cross 80
member, a plurality of shanks disposed
transversely of each of the side beams and
capable of rotary movement, upstanding
rock arms carried by the shanks, a bar oper-
atively engaged with each of said rock arms, 85
teeth depending from the shanks, a member
pivotally engaged with the forward end
portion of the bar, and means co-acting with
said last named member for imparting end-
wise movement to the bar for rocking the 90
shanks.
3. In combination with the side beams
of a harrow, shanks rotatably supported
by said beams, teeth depending from the
shanks, rock arms carried by the shanks, 95
bars operatively engaged with the rock arms
of the shanks, the forward end portions of
the arms being inwardly directed, a member
pivotally engaged with the inwardly direct-
ed portions of the bars, and means co-acting 100
with said last named member for imparting
endwise movement to the bars.
4. A harrow comprising a central beam, a
cross member carried by the forward end
thereof, side beams pivotally engaged with 105
the opposite end portions of the cross mem-
ber, teeth depending from said side beams, a
member slidably engaged with the central
beam, arms pivotally engaged with the slid.
ing member and with the side beams, means 110
for imparting movement to the sliding mem-
ber longitudinally of the central beam for
expanding or retracting the side beams, said
teeth being capable of rocking movement,
and means carried by the central beam for 115
imparting rocking movement to the teeth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my
signature in the presence of two witnesses.-
