UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAN L. COBB AND WILLIAM W. MOORE, OF ORANGE, TEXAS.
DUBBING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 10, 1919.
Application filed March 1, 1918. Serial No. 219,933.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, -DAN L. COBB and
W-LLa-AM W. MooxRE; citizens of the -United
'States, residing at Orange, in the county of
5 Orange and State' of Texas, 'have invented
certain new' and useful Improvements in
Dubbing-Machines; and we' do hereby de-
clare the following to be a full, clear, and ex-
act description of the invention, such as will
10 enable others-skilled 'in the art to which it
appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to dubbing ma=
chines, and the primary object of the inven-
tion is the provision of an improved ma-'
15 chine for dressing ship timber, so that the
same can be quickly and readily prepared.
Another object of the invention is- the pro-
vision of 'a 'portable machine carrying a mo-
tor and a rotatable cutter head for dressing
20 any type of ship timber after the same has
been 'placed in position 'to -build the frame-
work of a ship.
A "further -object of the invention is the
provision of a portable dressing machine
25 having a rotatable cutter -head and support-
ing wheels for engaging a track secured to
the 'sides of the timber to be dressed, the
wheels and cutter head- being adjustable, so
that the machine can be =used for any size
30 and' type of timber.
A still further. object of the invention is
to 'provide an' improved machine of the
above' character, which is- durable and effi-
cient in use, one that is simple and easy to
35 manufacture, and 'one' that can be placed
upon the market at a reasonable cost.-
With these and other objects in view,-the
invention consists in the novel construction,-
arrangenient and formation of parts, as will
40 be hereinafter more specifically described,
claimed;, and illustrated in the accompany-
ing drawings, forming, a part thereof, in
which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved
45 dubbing machine,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved
machine, showing the same in operative po-
sition on a timber to be dressed,
Fig. 3 is a front elevation, partly in sec-
50 tion, of the' improved machine, showing the
same in position on a timber to be dressed,-
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one of the ad-
justable wheels mounted on the driving,,,spindle for engaging 'the rails nailed to the
timber to be dressed, ''55
Fig. '5 is a 'detail section, taken on the
line '5-5 of Fig. 4,
Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken
through the improved cutter head on the
line .6-6. 60
Referring to. the drawings in detail,
wherein similar reference numerals desig-
nate corresponding parts throughout 'the
several views, the numeral 1 generally indi-
cates the improved machine, and 2 the tim- 65
ber which is to be 'dressed. The improved
machine 1 coniprises a frame 3 formed of a
pair of spaced longitudinally extending bars
4 held together against relative movement
by brace irons 5, which extend laterally of 70
the side bars 4. Suitable cross beams may
be positioned between the brace rods 5 and
secured to the side bars 4 for holding the
frame against all strains. The forward ends
of the side bars 4 are provided with enlarged 75
bearings 6' for rotatably receiving the shaft
or spindle 7. One' end' of the -shaft pro-
trudes outwardly through one of the side
bars 4, and is provided with a drive pulley
8.- The rear, end of the frame 2 is provided 80
with a hanger 9 for receiving a motor 10 for
driving the shaft 7. The cradle 9 consists
of a supporting bar 11 extending parallel
with the side bars and running from the Pear
brace rods 5 to the adjacent brace rods 5, 85
and this bar 11 is connected with one of the
side' bars 4 by supporting bars 12, which re-
ceive the base 13 of the motor. Any suitable
type of motor may be' employed for driv-
ing the shaft 7; and, as illustrated in the 90
drawings, an electric motor is provided, and
the armature shaft 14 thereof is extended
outwardly from the motor toward one of
the side bars 4, while the same is journaled
in a bearing 15 secured to a supporting 95
block 16' bolted, as at 17', to the rear por-
tion of the side bar 4. The outer end of
the armature shaft 14 is provided with a
drive pulley 16, and the pulley 16 is con-
nected with the pulley 8 of the shaft 7 by 100
means of a belt 17.
The power for running the motor may be
obtained from any suitable source, and a
switch 18 is provided for controlling the
operation of the same. 105
The shaft 7 is provided with a pair of dia-1,306,249.
