UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED T. FOWLES, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
ATTACHING-RING.1,382,496.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 21, 1921.
Application filed June 13, 1919. Serial No. 304,044.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. ALFRED T. Fowi s,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new an(1. useful
Improved Attaching-Rings, of which the
following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to pro-
vide an improved two part ring for connec-
10 Lion with a boiler and the upper terminal
of the jacket or casing of a water heater of
the type disclosed in my co-pending applica-
tion for patent for water heater filed June
13, 1919, Serial No. 304,041, which may be
15 conveniently applied to the boiler and jacket
and is attractive in appearance.
Another object is the provision of an at-
taching ring of this character which pro-
vides a tight joint between the jacket and
20 boiler.
With these and other objects in view as
will appear as the description proceeds the
invention comprises the novel features of
construction, combination of elements and
25 arrangement of parts which will be more
fully described in the following specification
and set forth with particularity in the claim
appended hereto.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly
30 broken away of the improved ring and a
boiler and jacket,
Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the ring,
and,
Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary perspec-
35 live view of one terminal of one of the ring
sections.
Referring to the drawings in detail, where-
in similar reference characters designate cor-
responding parts throughout the several
40 views, the numerals 5 and 6 indicate the
companion ring sections which are identi-
cal in shape and construction and are adapt-
ed to be coupled together to provide a cir-
cular ring to surround and inclose the upperedge of the jacket of a water heater as 45
shown in Fig. 1. Each section includes a
downwardly flaring flange 7 adapted to over-
lie and snugly fit the restricted upper ter-
minal of the jacket 8 and provided in its
body portion with an internal circular 50
groove 9 adapted to receive a packing ring
whereby when the semi-circular sections are
brought into engagement with the outer sur-
face of a boiler whereby a tight joint is pro-
vided. The adjacent terminals of the see- 55
tions are provided with ears 10 having hori-
zontally registering apertures therein for the
reception of a bolt 11 carrying a nut 12
by which the sections are brought into snug
engagement with the boiler and jacket. 60
In use, the jacket 8 is applied to the boiler
and the sections 5 and 6, subsequent to the
removal of the bolts 11 are applied over the
top edge of the jacket and in snug engage-
ment with the outer surface of the boiler. A 65
packing ring such as asbestos or the like is
placed in the groove 9 and bears against the
boiler. * The bolts 11 are subsequently in-
serted through the registering apertures of
the ears 10 and by advancing the nuts 12 70
upon the screw threads of the bolts the sec-
tions are brought and retained in firm en-
gagement with the boiler thus forming a
closure for the joint between the boiler and
the jacket. 75
What I claim is:
A two part clamping ring formed of sepa-
rable sections and with an internal, annular
groove adapted to receive packing between
the ring and the exterior surface of a boiler, 80
and a downward, flaring flange depending
from the ring and considerably below the
groove, and alined apertured ears integral
with the ring receiving bolts, securing the
separable ring sections. 85
In testimony whereof I affix my signature
hereto.
ALFRED T. FOWLES.
