UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. KIRLIN, OF SAN BENITO, TEXAS.
KNIFE-SHARPENER.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 5,1918.
Application filed December 5, 1916. Serial No. 135,207.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. KIRLN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at San
Benito, in the county of Cameron and State
5 of Texas, have invented new and useful Im-
provements in Knife-Sharpeners, of which
the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision
of a device primarily designed for sharpen-
10 ing table knives, but also susceptible for use
in placing a keen edge upon cutting tools
and implements of a like nature.
More specifically stated the invention em-
bodies a stock preferably formed from a
15 single piece of material, and designed to be
readily clamped upon the edge of a tableor
other support, and adapted for use in con-
nection with a pair of bits or cutters having
convex cutting edges disposed in confront-
2o ing relation, the bits or cutters being capable
of adjustment to present new portions of the
respective cutting edges for effective work as
the occasion requires.
The nature and advantages of the inven-
25 tion will be better understood from the fol-
lowing description when taken in connection
with the accompanying drawing, the inven-
tion residing in the construction, combina-
tion and arrangement of parts as claimed.
30 in the drawing forming part of this speci-
fication like numerals of reference indicate
similar parts in the several views and where-
in:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device
35 constructed in accordance with my inven-
tion.
Fig. 2 is a view looking in the direction
of the arrow in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the stock.
40 Fig. 4 is a similar view of one of the cut-
ters or bits.
A device constructed in accordance with
my invention embodies a stock 10, prefer-
ably constructed from a single piece of ma-
45 terial, and offset at one end as at 11 to pro-
vide a substantially U-shaped portion which
is adapted to be fitted upon the edge of a
table or other similar support indicated at
12. The flange 13 of the U-shaped portion
50 is provided with a threaded aperture through
which a clamp screw 14 is threaded for co-
operation with the support 12 to hold the
device clamped upon the latter. Manifestly
this is accomplished by tightening the clamp
55 screw against the under side of the support.
The main body portion of the stock 10 isbifurcated to provide a substantially V-
'shaped slot 15 opening at the upper edge of
the stock, while the adjacent edges of the
separated portions defined by the bifurcation 60
are convex as at 16. The blade of the knife
or other similar article indicated at 17 is ar-
ranged within the slot 15 and moved therein
to be sharpened in the manner to be pres-
ently described. 05
In connection with a stock constructed as
described, I preferably employ two bits or
cutters 18 each of which is identical in con-
struction. There is one bit or cutter pro-
vided for each of the separated portions of 70
the stock defined by the bifurcation, and
said cutters or bits are correspondingly
shaped with respect to the separated por-
tions against one side of which they are se-
cured. Each cutter is provided with a 75
curved edge portion 19 corresponding to the
convexity of the adjacent edge 16 of its as-
sociated separated section of the stock. The
cutters or bits are so disposed that the curved
edges 19 thereof are arranged in confront- 80
ing relation so that when the blade of the
knife or other article to be worked upon is
positioned within the slot 15, between thq
cutters or bits 18, it is only necessary to
draw the knife a few times between the bits 85
or cutters in order to place a keen edge upon
the blade. It is of course to be understood
that the bits or cutters will be constructed
from the hardest chill steel, and have their
curved edges very sharp for this purpose. 90
Each of the cutters is provided with a ver-
tically disposed arcuate shaped slot 20
through which extends a threaded bolt 21,
which latter projects from each of the sepa-
rated portions of the stock defined by the 95
bifurcation. These slots permit the bits or
cutters to be adjusted with a view of pre-
senting new portions of their curved edges
for effective work, when certain portions of
the said curved edges become worn. This 100
adjustment can be readily and quickly ef-
fected, and the bits or cutters retained in
their adjusted positions by tightening the
thumb nuts 23 upon the bolts. It is obvious
that the arcuate shaped slots permits the 105
curved edges of the respective cutters to as-
sume a proper position relatively when the
cutters are moved either in itn upward or
downward direction for the purpose above
mentioned. 110

going description the nature and advantages1,255,760.
