of the door 2 remote from the pivot 3 and
a- latch or bolt 16 is mounted to extend
through this guide or loop and engage a
keeper 17 on the side of the car. This latch
5 or bolt 16 has a down turned portion 18 at
one end which is pivoted to the downwardly
extending arm 19 of an angle lever 20 ful-
crumed upon the door 2 near the guide 15.
A pin 21 is also pivoted to the depending end
10 18 of the latch and plays within a guide and
support 22 secured on the door 2, as shown, a
platform or supporting ledge 23 being pro-
vided at the adjacent end- of the bar 8 to
support the pin 21 and the spring 24 coiled
15 around the same so as to prevent excessive
distortion of the spring and also prevent the
pin being drawn through the guide 22 so as
to drop therefrom. The lever 20 is so dis-
posed and so proportioned that its longer arm
20 may be very readily grasped when it is de-
sired to release and open the door. When
the free end of the lever rests in the upper
notch 14 of the bar 13, the spring 24 will be
under some compression so that if the lever
25 be lifted from itsl engagement with said
notch and -released, the spring will at once
expand and force the latch into complete
engagement with the keeper 17 and cause the
lever to swing downwardly. When the le-
3o ver is in its lowermost position, it may be
engaged in the notch 14 at the lower end of
the bar 13 and will then aid in holding the
latch in the keeper 17 so that accidental
opening of the door will be prevented.
35 When the car is to be unloaded, the door
7 is slid so .as to uncover the opening 5
whereupon a portion of the grain will flow
from the car and the end of the lever will
be accessible through the opening 5 so that
40 it may be released from the lower end of
the bar 13. The grain will also fall away
from the upper portion of the dooi to an ex-
tent sufficient to permit the lever to be
reached and an upward swinging movement
45 imparted to the lever will.then first with-
draw the latch from the keeper 17 and then
swing the door upon its pivotal support
into the upright position, shown in Fig. 2,
the latch springing into engagement with a
50 keeper. 25 upon the car near the roof thereof.
The end of- the lever may be easily reached
through the door opening so that it may be
caused to engage iii the notch 14 at what isnormally the lower end of the bar 13 and
release of the door, with the consequent 55
dropping of the same before the grain is un-
loaded, will be prevented. A bracket 26 is
provided upon the floor of the car to be en-
gaged by the corner of the door so that the
door will lie close to the side of the car in its 0
lowered position, and a similar bracket 27
is provided on the side of the car to receive
the edge, of the door when it is raised.
My device is obviously simple in the con-
struction and arrangement of its parts and 65
may be readily applied to any grain car.
Having thus described the invention, what
is claimed as new is:-
1. The combination of a latch, an angle
lever pivoted at one end to the latch, means 70
to hold the lever in either latching or un-
latching position, a guide, a pin slidably
mounted in the guide and pivoted to the
latch, and a spring around the pin between
the guide and the latch and tending to hold 75
the latch in latching position.
2. The combination of a brace bar having
notches in its ends, a latch, a lever pivoted
at- one end to the latch and adapted to have
its free end engaged in either notch in the 80
brace bar, and means acting on the lever and
the latch tending to hold the same in latch-
ing position.
3. The combination of a lever, a latch piv-
oted to the lever, a guide, a pin slidably 85
fitted in the guide and pivoted to the lever
and the latch, a spring coiled around the pin
between the latch and the guide, and a
supporting ledge immediately below said
spring. 90
4. The combination of a vertically dis-
posed brace bar, a latch, a lever pivoted at
one end to the latch and having its free end
arranged to engage and be held by either
end of the brace bar, a guide, a pin slidably 95
mounted at one end in said guide and hav-
ing its opposite end pivoted to the latch, a
spring coiled around said pin between the
guide and the latch and normally holding
the latch in projected position, and a Ion- 100
gitudinally extending ledge below the spring
between. the guide and the latch to support.
the spring at all times.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
