UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICES
WILLIAM C. McCORMICK, OF GRANBURY, TEXAS.
- SWITCH-LOCKING DEVICE.1,297,200.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 11, 1919.
Application filed Nay 15, 1918. Serial No. 234,740.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLiAM C. McCon-
MICK, a citizen of the United States, resid-
ing at Granbury, in the county of Hood and
5 State of Texas, have invented new and use-
ful Improvements in Switch-Locking De-
vices, of which the following is a specifica-
tion.
This invention relates to switch locking
10 devices, and the object is to provide a con-
struction which shall be more efficient and
more easily operated than many of the types
of locking devices now in use.
A further object is to provide in connec-
15 tion with an operating arm carrying a hasp
or the like, a resiliently mounted latch bolt
designed to be engaged by the hasp for
throwing the bolt to inoperative position,
the latter then returning to operative posi-
20 tion and passing through the hasp and re-
taining the latter in position for locking the
switch.
A still further object is to provide means
for retaining the latch both in inoperative
25 position when desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in
view, the invention consists in the novel con-
struction, combination and arrangement of
elements hereinafter described and claimed.
30 In the drawings-
Figure 1 is a view in vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section.
Fig. 3 is an elevation with the cover for
the casing inclosing the locking mechanism,
35 removed.
Fig. 4 is a view of the cover for the cas-
ing.
Fig. 5 shows a pivoted arm which oper-
ates through a slot in the cover, and retains
40 the locking bolt at times in inoperative po-
sition.
In carrying out my invention I provide a
switch stand including any suitable sup-
porting structure such. as that shown at 10,
45 carrying a table 12 provided with a slot 14
and with a central aperture 15, accommo-
dating the rotatable member 16, carried by
the rotatable element 17. The element last
named is provided with a slot 18 having a
50 beveled end portion 19 with which the bev-
eled end 20 of the lever 21 comes into con-
tact. The lever 21 is pivoted at 22, and is
provided with a bail shaped member or hasp
24 engaged by the locking bolt, or latch bolt35. One end of member 17 carries a plural- 55
ity of upwardly extending supporting mem-
bers 26 between which the free end of the
lever 21 moves. These members 26 support
a casing or the like shown at 28, serving to
mount the locking members proper. The 60
casing is closed by means of a plate 30 pro-
vided with a key hole slot 31 and with a
slot 32' through which a bolt retaining de-
vice passes, this retaining device holding the
bolt in inoperative position when desired. 65
On one wall of the casing is a flat plate
32 having a beveled end 33 extending to the
edge of the slot 34 in the adjacent wall of
the casing. Opposite plate 32 I mount the
latch bolt 35 having a cutaway portion 36 70
therein, the portion last named being en-
gaged by the key to be inserted through slot
31. One end of the bolt constituting the en-
gaging end is beveled at 37 and cooperates
with the beveled portion of plate 32. The 75
end of the bolt is recessed at 39 and is en-
gaged by coiled spring 40 for normally
throwing the latch bolt into engaging posi-
tion. Upon contact between the hasp and
the beveled end of the bolt, the latter re- 80
cedes permitting the hasp to pass between
the bolt and plate 32, locking the switch
arm.
In order to retain the locking bolt in in-
operative position when desired, I provide 85
the latter with a notch 42 engaged by a piv-
oted member 43 mounted in ears 43' and ex-
tending through slot 32' of the casing plate
or covering 30.
What is claimed is: 90
1. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a switch stand, a rotatable
member supported thereby, an arm pivotally
mounted and adapted to rotate said member
when in a given position, and-means for lock- 95
ing the arm, said means last named includ-
ing a hasp carried by the arm, a resiliently
mounted locking bolt engaging the hasp,
and means for retaining the locking bolt at
times in inoperative position. 100
2. In a device of the class described, a ro-
tatable member comprising an element of a
switch operating device, an arm pivotally
connected therewith and means for looking
the arm, said means comprising a looking 105
bolt having a beveled end portion, a plate
positioned opposite said locking bolt and in
alinement therewith and having a beveled
