UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WRIGHT, OF VON ORMY, TEXAS.
CHAIR AND COUNTER.Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Application filed May 22, 1920. Serial No. 383,532.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WRIGHT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at
Von Ormy, in the county of Bexar and
3 State of Texas, have invented new and use-
ful Improvements in-Chairs and Counters,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chairs, and has
particular reference to means for mounting
) a chair with relation to a counter, table or
the like, so that the chair can be slid to a
position beneath the counter when not in
use and readily moved to a position for use
when desired, by one positioned behind the
S counter.
Another object of the invention resides in
the provision of a chair of particular con-
struction, and wherein both the seat and
back of the chair are relatively movable, so
) as to occupy positions for use as the chair
is -moved from beneath the counter, and to
occupy a folded position when the chair is
moved beneath the counter.
In carrying out my invention, I provide
3 the front wall of the counter with a door
disposed adjacent - each chair, a door open-
ing inwardly of the- counter, and simultane-
ously with the movement of the chair to a
position for use.
> Other objects and advantages will appear
as the following detail- description is read
in connection with the accompanying draw-
ing, the invention residing in the construe-
tion, combination and arrangement of parts
S as claimed.
In the drawings, forming part of this- ap-
nlication like numerals - of reference- indi-
cate similar parts in the -several views and
wherein:
) Figure 1 is a front elevation of a counter
showing the position of the chairs with re-
spect to the counter. -.
Fig. 2 is a.vertical -sectional view through
the counter showing one of the chairs in
5 side elevation and in position beneath the
counter.
Fig.;3 is a similar view showing the chair
in extended -position for use. .
Fig. 4 is a view showing the rear.eleva-
) tion of a chair folded, the counter being
partly in section.
Fig.-5 is an enlarged fragmentary view
showing the connection between the chairand door which is opened when the chair is
extended for use. 55
Fig. 6 is a view of one of the hinge mem-
bers forming part of the front of the chair.
Fig. 7 is a view of the hinge member
forming part of the back of the chair.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 60
indicates a counter of any wellknown con-
struction, the front wall 11 -of which in-
cludes a plurality of inwardly opening
doors 12, one of these doors being- disposed
adjacent each of the chairs B'. 65
Each chair includes a seat portion 14 sup-
ported by the front and rear members C
and D respectively, corner blocks 14' being
arranged between the rear member D and
the seat 14. The rear member -D projects a 70
slight distance above the seat 14 as shown.
Each of the members - C and D includes a
fixed section 15 and a movable section 16,
the- latter sections being hinged at 17 to
swing -in the same direction, so as to assume 75
a horizontal position when the chair is pro-
jected from beneath the counter as shown
in Fig. 3, or to assume a vertical position
when the chair, is positioned beneath - the
counter as shown in Fig. 2. Secured to the 80
movable section 16 of the member C adja-
cent each side thereof, is a pair of U-shaped
elements -18 and through each pair is slid-
ably fitted a rod 19 having a broad -extrem-
ity or end portion 20 to prevent the rod 85
from being separated from the elements 18.
Also secured upon the movable section 16
of the member - D,- are sleeves 21 through
'each of which slides the hinged member 22,
the latter being hinged as 'at 22' to the mem- 90
bernD, while the forward-end-of the member -
22-is.connected with a link 23. This link is
vertically disposed and pivotally associated
'with a transversely disposed member 24
hinged as at 25 to the lower end of thechair 95
back 26, the forward end of the member 24
being pivotally mounted upon. the front
member C of the chair. structure. It will
be noted that both of the movable sections
16 of the respective members C and D .are 100
hingedly mounted upon the base or founda-
tion of:.the counter A, and are .only con-
nected 'with the members C-and _D through
the instrumentality of the rods 19 and the
hinged -members 22. The back of the chair 105
26 includes. spaced parallel -members .as1,359,118.
