shown in Fig. 4, these members sliding
through slots in the seat 14 of the chair, it
being understood that the chair back 26 is
raised when the chair is moved from be-
5 neath the counter for use and lowered' when
the chair is arranged beneath the counter in
its folded position. For moving the chair
B, I make use of two flexible elements in-
dicated at 30 and 31, the former being'
10 trained over a small pulley 32 mounted upon,
the rear wall of the counter, and, thence
under a pulley 33 arranged at the base of
the counter, the terminal of the flexible ele-
ment 30 being secured to the member of
15 the' chair as at 34. The opposite end of
this flexible. element projects through an
opening in the counter and is arranged
within convenient reach of the attendant.
The other element 31 is trained over a pul-
20 ley 32 similar to the pulley 32 above men-
tioned, but this element is directly connected
with the member C of the chair, as at 35.
Manifestly, when a pull is exerted upon the
element 30, by the attendant standing be-
25 hind the counter, the flexible element 30 op-
erates to project the chair B from beneath
the counter A. When a-pullis exerted upon
the flexible element 31 it moves the chair
from its projected position to its folded po-
30 sition beneath the counter.
In practice,- assuming that the chair is in
its folded position, and arranged beneath
the counter as shown in Fig. 2, and that it is
desired to move the chair to a position for
35 use, the flexible element 30 is pulled- upon
as above stated, and the chair B is obviously
projected from beneath the counter, during
which time, the movable element sections 16
of the front and rear members C and. D of
40 the chair move upon their pivots 17 from a
vertical to a horizontal position as shown in
Fig. 3. . However, when the chair is pro-
j ected7:from beneath the counter through the
instrumentality of the flexible element '30,
45 it does not assume its -full and extended po-
sition, as it is susceptible of sliding move-
ment with respect to the horizontally dis-
posed sections 16, and for this -purpose -I
provide the member D of the chair with a
50 handle 36 which. is adapted to be grasped-
by the user of the chair for moving the lat-
ter outwardly from the counter A. When
the chair is .moved in this manner, the rod
19 and the hinged. member 22 slide out-.
55 wardly upon the sections 16. The broad
extremity 20 of the rod '19 limits the move-
ment' of the rod in this direction while the
joint- between the hinged members_ 22 and
the links 23 cooperating with the sleeves '21
60 limit the movement of the members 22 in an
outward direction. As shown in Fig. 2-the
links 23 which are connected with the
hinged members 22 and the transverse mem-
ber 24.are inclined forwardly, it being. fur-
65 ther noted that the back 26 of the chair isnot lowered to lie wholly at one side of the
member D, and that the seat 14 of the chair
is in an elevated position, but when the chair
is projected from beneath the counter and
subsequently moved.away from the counter 7
in a manner above described, the relative
change in position of parts causes the back
26 of the chair to assume a position for use
as shown in Fig. 3, the seat 14 being lowered
a distance equal to the height of the mov- 7
able section 16 of the member D. When it is
desired to move the chair from its extended
to its folded position beneath the counter, a
pull is exerted upon the 'flexible element 31
which, moves the chair in a direction of the e
counter, causing the sections 16 to turn upon
their pivots 17 returning the sections to
their normal vertical positions. During the
return of these sections to their normal po-
sitions the back 36 is lowered and the seat f
14 elevated so that as the chair moves be-
neath the counter the parts are returned to
the position as shown in Fig. 2. The pulley
37 is suspended from the underside of the
top of the counter and arranged over this
pulley is a cable 38 one end of which is
secured to the movable section 16 of the
niember D chair. 'construction, while the op-
posite end of the cable, supports the weight
39.. This acts as a counter balance to facili-
tate the returning of the chair and its asso-
ciated parts to their normal position.
When- the chair B is projected from be-
neath the counter for use, it .is not spaced
far enough-from the front wall of the coun-
ter for the comfort of the user, so that in
order to provide -ample space for the legs
and feet of the user, I provide in the front
wall of the casing a' plurality of inwardly
swinging doors 40, one of these doors being
arranged adjacent each chair B. Each door
-is connected to the adjacent chair by means
of an arm 41 which has one end pivotally
connected to a slotted link 42, the latter in
turn being secured to a right angularly dis-
posed slotted. plate 43 mounted. upon the,
base of the counter as shown in both Figs. 2'
and 5. The plate 43 is connected to the mov-
able section 16 of the member C of the chair
by means of a link 44 so that when this 'sec-
tion 16 assumes a horizontal position, inci-
dent to the movement of the chair to its ex-
tended position the arm 41 is moved in a
direction to open the .door 40. .The .door
opening together with the 'opening in the
counter for this chair, provides ample space
for the legs or feet of the user of the chair.
It is of course. apparent that the door is
automatically closed when the - chair is
moved to a position beneath the counter.
While'it is believed that=from the fore-
going description the nature and advantages
of. the invention will be readily apparent,
I desire to have it understood that I do not
limit myself to the details .herein shown
