UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
MARGURITE E. BEARD, OF WESTHOFF, TEXAS.
TYPEWRITER-DESK.Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
Application filed October 23, 1919. Serial No. 332,689.To all whon it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGiUrTE E. BEARD,
citizen of the United States, residing at
Westhoff, in the county of Dewitt, and State
5 of Texas, have invented certain new and use-
ful Improvements in Typewriter-Desks; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a
full, clear, and exact description of the in-
vention, such as will enable others skilled in
10 the art to which it appertains to make and
use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful
improvements in typewriter desks and has
for one of its objects the provision of a com-
15 partment having a movable platform sup-
porting a typewriter and is capable of being
raised and lowered within the desk so as to
position the typewriter for use or non-use
as desired.
20 Another object of this invention is the
provision of doors or lids to the compart-
ment which when in closed position will
form an even writing or resting surface to
the desk and said doors or lids have connec-
25 tion with the platform so that on moving
them to an open position, the typewriter
will be elevated in a vertical path to the
plane of the top of the desk so as to posi-
tion the same ready for use and obviate the
30 employment of special fastening means for
securing the typewriter to the platform.
A further object of this invention is the
provision of a typewriter desk of the above
stated character, which shall be simple, dur-
35 able and efficient, and which may be man-
ufactured and sold at a comparatively low
cost.
With these and other objects in view as
will become more apparent as the descrip-
40 tion proceeds, the invention consists in such
novel features of construction, combination
and arrangement of parts as will be here-
inafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my in-
45 vention, reference is to be had to the follow-
ing description and accompanying draw-
ings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a desk
constructed in accordance with my inven-
50 tion,
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the doors or.
lids in an open position and having the
typewriter supported in a raised position
ready for use, .
55 Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view illus-trating the typewriter concealed within the
desk,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the desk with the
doors or lids open and with the typewriter
removed from the platform, 60
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view illus-
trating the means of securing the hoisting
cables to the platform.
Referring in detail to the drawings, nu-
meral 1 indicates as an entirety the desk 65
consisting of a top secured on the body 3.
The body portion 3 is supported by suitable
legs 4 and has formed in its front wall 5
a leg receiving space 6, so that.a person can
sit in close proximity to the desk in com- 70
fort. The front portion of body 3 has
drawer receiving spaces 7 on each side of the
leg receiving space 6 to receive drawers 8.
The drawers 8 are of any desired construc-
tion provided with locking means 9. The 75
front wall 5 of the body portion 3 directly
over the leg receiving space 6 is provided
with a drawer opening 10 to receive a com-
paratively long drawer 11 for containing
pen, pencils and like writing materials. 80
The body 3 of the desk 1 is provided
with a chamber 12 which opens outwardly
through the top 2 and is disposed over the
leg receiving space 6 and in rear of drawer
11. The chamber 12 slidably receives a 85
platform 13 which has secured to its under
face a coil spring 14 that bears against the
bottom wall of the chamber for urging the
platform upwardly in the chamber. The
platform is adapted to have positioned 90
thereon a typewriter and when in its lower-
most position rests upon supporting mem-
bers 15 located on the bottom wall of the
chamber 12. Surrounding the upper end of
the chamber and across the top 2 are strips 95
or members 16 which have hinged thereto
lids or doors 17. The platform 13 is pro-
vided with grooves 18 in its bottom and end
walls and has secured therein cables 20.
The cables 20 project beyond each end of 100
the platform and are secured to the lids or
doors 17. The end members or strips 16
are provided with grooves 21 in which are
positioned rollers 22 over which pass the
cables 20 to permit free movement of said 105
cables during the opening and closing of the
doors or lids.
In operation, a typewriter is placed or
positioned above the platform 13 and when
not desiring to use the typewriter, the lids 1101,376,312.
