CORE-TAKING DEVICE.Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 20, 1922.
Application filed July 18, 1921. Serial No. 485,565.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTON G. CHRISTIAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Houston, in the county of Harris and State
5 of Texas, have invented certain new and
useful Improvements in a Core-Taking De--
vice, of which the following is a specifica-
tion.
This invention relates to new and useful
10 improvements in a'core taking device.
One object of the invention is to provide
a device of the character described which
will form a core, in the process of drilling,
and embodies means for severing the core,
15 when formed, and retaining the same in the
core barrel until, it is withdrawn for inspec-
tion.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention has particular relation to cer-
20 tain novel features of construction, opera-
tion and arrangement of parts, an example
of which is given in this specification and
illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein:-

the device.

on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 4, is a perspective view of the core
barrel.
Figure 5, is a plan view of an annular
plunger employed, and
35 Figure 6, is a cross sectional view of said
plunger.
Referring now more particularly to the
drawings, the numeral 1, designates the drill
stem to the lower end of which a drill bit
40 2 is attached. This bit has a central bore
3 therethrough which continues on through
the pilot core forming bit 4 which is formed
integrally with, and depends from, the drill
bit.
45 An inside pipe has its lower section 5
threaded into the upper end of the drill bit
2. The upper end of this section 5 is re-
duced forming the annular shoulder 6, and
spaced above this shoulder there is a ring
50 like nut 7. An annular plunger 8 works
on the section 5 between said shoulder and
nut and its movement is limited thereby.
The plunger is seated on a coil spring 9
which surrounds the section 5 and rests upon
55 the upper end of the drill bit.
Within the section 5 there is a removablecore barrel 10, formed of sheet metal, and
open along one side as shown in Figure 4.
The bit 2 has the semi-circular recesses
11, 11 on opposite sides of the bore 3 where- 60
in the segmental' jaws, 12, 12 are mounted
to rotate. Actuating rods 13, 13 are adjust-
ably secured, at their upper. ends, to the
plunger 8 and work through the bores 14,
14 through the drill bit and their lower ends 65
are pivoted to the outer edges of the cor-
responding jaws 12. These rods work
through stuffing boxes 15, 15 secured in
the bores 14.
The plunger 8 has water holes 16, 16 70
which permit the passage of water down
the bit and the water passes on down,
through the passageways 17, 17 through said
bit, to the cutting points thereof, to carry
away the cuttings. 75
In drilling the water is forced down
through the stem 1 under pressure and forces
the plunger 8 downwardly against the
shoulder 6. This movement of the plunger
will operate, through the rods 13, to par- 80
tially rotate the jaws 12 to align their
straight sides with the wall of the bore 3,
and permit the core formed by the bit 4,
to pass without obstruction into the bar-
rel 10. 85
When it is desired to withdraw the core
the water pressure is cut off and the spring
9 will elevate the plunger, which will op-
erate through the rods 13 to carry the jaws
12 into the position shown in Figure 1, and 90
in engagement with the core. The plunger,
in this position, abuts against the nut 7
and as the bit is withdrawn the jaws will
be held against turning and releasing the
core. The operative edges of the jaws 12 95
are serrated as shown, so as to securely en-
gage with the core.
When the device is withdrawn the inside
pipe may be separated and the core barrel
removed and opened and the sample there- 100
in readily removed for inspection.
For convenience in manufacture a dove
tailed section 18 of the bit 2 is removable.
When removed the recesses 11 are exposed
and the jaws 12 readily mounted in place 10
and connected to the rods 13. When so
assembled the section 18 is inserted in place
and pinned to the bit and the jaws are thus
enclosed and protected.
