UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BILLIARD VINCENT, OF SPUR, TEXAS.
COTTON-PICKING DEVICE.Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 25, 1921.
Application filed February 18, 1920. Serial No. 359,559.- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE HILLIARD VIN-
CENT, a citizen of the United States, residing
at Spur, in the county of Dickens and State
5 of Texas, have invented certain new and use-
ful Improvements in Cotton-Picking De-
vices, of which the following is a specifica-
tion, reference being had to the accompany-
ing drawings.
10 This invention relates to certain improve-
ments in cotton picking devices, and it is an
object of the invention to provide a novel
and improved device of- this general charac-
ter which may be readily and conveniently
15 engaged with the outer extremity of the
digit of the hand.
Another object of the invention is to pro-
vide a novel and improved device of this gen-
eral character including a digit encircling
20 band provided with means to. afford protec-
tion to the opposite sides of the digit and
wherein a picking element is carried by the
band.
The invention consists in the details of
25 construction and in the combination and ar-
rangement of the several parts of my im-
proved cotton picking device whereby cer-
tain important. advantages are attained and
the device rendered simpler, less expensive
30 and otherwise more convenient and advan-
tageous for use, as will be hereinafter more
fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will
hereinafter be definitely claimed.
35 In order that my invention may be the bet-
ter understood, I will now proceed to de-
scribe the same with reference to the accom-
panying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation diagram-
40 matically illustrating a hand having applied
thereto a picking device constructed in ac-
cordance with an embodiment of my inven-
tion;
Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of one of my
45 improved devices in applied position;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in plan of one
of my improved devices in an extended or
flattened condition;
Fig. 4 is a view in top plan of a picking
50 device constructed in accordance with a fur-
ther embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 5 is a view in bottom plan of the de-
vice as'illustrated in Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of a de-
55 vice as disclosed in Figs. 4 and 5.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw-ings, B denotes a split band adapted to en-
circle the digit of a. hand adjacent the top
thereof. One end portion of the band is
provided with the longitudinally spaced and, 60
transversely disposed slots 1 through which
is adapted to be threaded the opposite end
portion of the band whereby said band B
may be adjusted in accordance with the re-
quirements of practice and in a manner to 65
assure an effective engagement with the digit
of the hand upon which it is applied.
The band B, at substantially diametri-
cally opposed points, is provided with the
rearwardly directed arms or extensions 2 70
which are adapted to overlie the side faces
of the digit and to afford protection therefor.
The extremities of the arms or extensions 2
are provided with the slots or openings 3
through which is directed a second band B' 75
adapted to encircle the digit. The band B'
is split and one end portion thereof is pro-
vided with the longitudinally spaced open-
ings 4 through which is threaded the oppo-
site end portion of the band B' so that said 80
band B' may be readily adjusted as the oc-
casions of practice may necessitate.
The central portion of the band B and sub-
stantially midway between the arms or ex-
tensions 2 is provided with the openings 5 85
spaced in a direction circumferentially of the
band B and through which extend the free
end portions of a picking element E. The
element E is substantially U-shape in form
and the central part of its intermediate por- 90
tion a is pinched or otherwise flexed to afford
an outstanding loop or extension 6.
Coacting with the band B and the side
members b of the element E is a bracing strap
or member M which operates to maintain the 95
element E substantially rigid so that the
efficiency of such element E during a work-
ing operation is materially increased.
In practice it is intended that one of my
improved devices be applied to the extremi- 1.00
ties of all of the digits of the hand so that,
when necessary, a pinching action may be
created to remove the cotton, although this
is not necessary under all conditions as the
formation or shape of the element E in a 105
majority of instances permits the cotton to
be readily removed by the use of a single
digit.
As is well known, cotton is soft and
springy and the bolls are of different sizes. nio
My improved clamping element E can be
readily adjusted as required by pressing1,366,436.
