Better Try That Home Garden This
Year as Groceries May Get High
COLLEGE STATION, April 3.
—With spring here and the re-
cent rains in parts of the state
should step up the tempo of the
home gardeners. John E. Hutchi-
son, horticulturist for the Texas
Agricultural Extension Service,
says if the early sales of vege-
table seeds are an indication of
the amount of gardening to be
done, chances are good that the
1952 goal of 600,000 home gar- i
variety.
Stagger the planting date for
the sweet corn, says Hutchison,
so the supply will last longer,

I says from six to twelve plants
will provide plenty of squash for
the average family.
It will soon be tomato planting
time in most sections of the state
and the specialist says, the plants
should be hardened off before
they are set in the garden.
Cutworms are always a threat
to young garden plants and
Hutchison says reports indicate
they are plentiful in many sec-
tions this year. He says they
can be controlled by applying 10
per cent chlordane dust to the
soil before the seed are planted
or in the case of plants to be set,
mix the dust into about a square
foot area of soil surrounding the
n’qnt The dust can be sprinkl-
ed on top of the soil after the
nlants are growing if it is then
worked into the soil. One appli-
cation is sufficient for the en-
tire season.
To give the tomato plants a
fast start, Hutchison suggests the
use of a starter solution. It is
mp<ie bv mixing two tablespoons
of 5-10-5 or 8-8-8 commercial fer-
tilizer in a gallon of water. It
is best to make the solution a
day ahead so the fertilizer will
have penty of time to dissolve.
Use about one pint of the solu-
tion on each plant after they are
er
points out the specialist, the
time for planting cool season veg-
etables is about over and the
warm season crops should now
receive attention. Green beans
are a favorite with most families.
The old favorite, Kentucky Won-
der, is a good pole snap bean
