A Moment With The Bible...
"And now why tarriest thou? arise and be baptised, and
wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord (Acts
22:16). This statement was directed to Saul of Tarsus, who
was later known as the Apostle Paul, by Ananias, a certain
disciple of the Lord. The New Testament’s introduction of
Saul shows him to be one of the greatest persecutors the
Church has ever known (Acts 8:1,3; 9:1-22). Did Saul
arise and have his sins washed away in baptism? Yes, Acts
9:18 rtates, “And immediately there fell from his eyes as
it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and
arose, and was baptized”. Can anyone become a Christian
and retain their past sins? Certainly not. When did Saul
become a Christian? He first saw a vision (Acts 9:3-6), but
according to Acts 22:16, this did not wash away_his sins;
for three days he was in the house of Judas FAsflNG and
PRAYING (Acts 9:9-12), but even fasting and praying
alone did not make Saul a Christian. Saul, as all of us,
needed one more thing to become a Christian — have his
sins washed away in baptism. All men must be born again to
become a Christian (John 3:3)- “Except a man be born of
WATER and of the SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the king-
dom of God” (John 3:5) Baptism is essential to salvation
(Mark 16:16). In baptism, we bury the old life of sin and
come forth from the grave of water, a new creature born
of the Spirit (Romans 6:4). Will you turn away from the
doctrine of man which states otherwise and return to the
New Testament pattern? We pray you will ... — By Rex
G. Tilly, Church of Christ, Houston and Reynosa Streets).
