Jockeying Authors.
Apropos of horses. Do you know how
important good jockeying is to authors?
Judicious management; letting the pub-
lic see your animal just enough, not too
much; holding him up hard when the
market is too full of him; letting him out
at just the right buying intervals; al-
ways gently feeling his mouth; never
slacking and never jerking the rein—
this is what I mean by jockeying.
When an author has a number of
books out a cunning hand will keep
them all spinning, as Signor Blitz does
his dinner plates, fetching each one up
as it begins to “wabble” by an advertise-
ment, a puff or a quotation.
Whenever the extracts from a living
writer begin to multiply fast in the
paper without obvious reason there is a
new book or a new edition coming. The
extracts are ground bait.—Oliver Wen-
dell Holmes.
His Hat Saved the Trestle.
Saturday evening Ben Rivers, of Jack-
eonville, Fla., while walking the West-
ern railroad track discovered that the
trestle over Highland branch was on
fire. He sent in an alarm to the officials,
and remained to fight the fire as best he
could. The only water to be obtained
was from the branch, and Rivers carried
it steadily in his hat for hours until as-
sistance arrived from town in the shape
of a locomotive loaded with employees.
The opportune aid of Rivers undoubted-
ly saved the trestle from destruction.—
Exchange.
The show of lotus in the lake on the
west side of Central park near One Hun-
dredth street, New York, continues, and
there are thousauds of seed vessels, full
blown blossoms and buds. A young
woman has been sketching the scene
daily for some time past. The impish
lads that infest the park stand upon the
edge of the lake and lasso the blossoms.
Dr. George Turner states that a cat
fed with the refuse food of some chil-
dren sick with diphtheria also suffered
severely with what seemed to be the
same disease.]

Between the roadside and the wood.
Between the dawning and the dew,
A tiny flower before the sun.
Ephemeral in time, I grew.
And there upon the trail of spring,
Not death nor love nor any name
Known among men in all their lands
Could blur the wild desire with shame.
But down my dayspan of the year
The feet of straying winds came by;
And all my trembling soul was thrilled
To follow one lost mountain cry.
And then my heart beat once and broke
To hear the sweeping rain forbode
Some ruin in the April world,
Between the woodside and the road.
Tonight can bring no healing now,
The calm of yesternight is gone;
Surely the wind is but the wind,
And 1 a broken wail thereon.

Some Valuable Suggestions About the
Choice of Flowers and Soil.
The potting of plants is a matter of
general interest at this season to all
housekeepers who desire to cultivate a
window garden as a part of their domes-
tic belongings. One grows to love flow-
ers, and different plants come to have an
almost distinct individuality of their
own from association. There is scarcely
anything that will win the heart away
from care like the love of flowers. Next
to the love of living things it raises the
possessor above merely selfish aims and
sordid cares.
The potting of plants is an impo^ant
matter. It is useless to depend upon the
plants that have been in blossom all
summer for the blossoms of the window
garden. Such plants as it is worth while
to keep over during the winter must be
given a season of rest before they can be
expectf d to bloom again, and for that
reason they should be put in the cellar,
watered sparsely and left to recuperate
till another summer. If the plants have
not been potted in August and sunk in
earth till the frost comes, this may be
done now.
The soil in which newly potted plants
are pu t should be neither too moist nor
too dry, but just moist enough to bind
well. If the plants have been in pots
and the soil around them has become
sour or there is any disease of the roots
which makes it desirable to put all new
soil around them, shake off the old earth
very carefully, unwinding it so as not to
break any of the delicate fibers of the
roots. The proper soil for potting flow-
ers is one part black earth, such as may
be found in dark, damp woods, two parts
sand, two parts well rotted barnyard
manure, one part garden earth and two
parts rotted leaf mold.
If it is convenient, however, it is better
to purchase a bushel of potting earth al-
ready prepared from the greenhouse. It
will cost about fifty cents a bushel.
^Greenhouses keep a compost heap and
are able to prepare their earth to order
with little trouble. It is folly to expect
flowers to bloom successfully in the
house when planted merely in the ordi-
nary garden soil. The result is the pain-
ful spectacle of a few sickly stalks, from
which half the leaves have fallen and
which is too often the only exhibit the
window garden makes. Unless the house
in which the window garden is placed is
wholesomely heated, at a temperature
not exceeding 70 degs., no plants or
flowers therein will flourish or bloom.
The presence of noxious coal, gas shows
at once in the growth of the window
garden. Some plants, it is true, flourish
even in the poisonous atmosphere of coal
gas; but no plants will bloom success-
fully and few will give any growth at
all. It pays to keep the gaslight out of
the room where the window garden is,
as more or less gas seems to escape from
almost all burners. At all events, plants
flourish very much better in a room
lighted by a lamp than in one supplied
with gaslight.
Jr. ^wKfctting a plant, see that the crown
of the plant, which is just above the
roots, is well above the soil and that the
roots are packed compactly in the pot.
A little “drainage,” formed of pieces of
broken pots, should always be placed in
the bottom to insure the flowing off of
surplus water, instead of its lying around
the roots and turning the soil sour.
After .n1 ? -tliey ehould 130
sunk in the earth and R'A*'. out as late as
possible in order to inure them to the
changes of winter.
Where there is danger of frost at night
it is better to bring the flowers in till
morning. Very delicate flowers must be
brought in the house for the winter
much earlier than the hardy specimens.
Individual treatment of the different
species and circumstances must govern
largely in the general treatment of the
window garden.—New York Tribune.

Quly served up in style with usual rebates.
