GENERAL DGS NEWS
PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
President's Report
Technology Day was a tremendous success; in
fact, there were several that suggested that we
have another in six months! Well, it takes at least
that amount of time to plan an event of that size-if
not the entire year! Anyway, we have some of the
same possibilities with our SIG groups that meet
every month - all that you have to do is to come
and learn. February 17th was my 401 advanced
educational group. In January, I prepared 15
handouts not knowing what to expect - only three
showed up. This time I printed out 11 handouts
(including the one that I was going to use. Was I
surprised when 11 people showed up to learn
about reading old handwriting! Some of the tips that
they asked for were very much in the technology
field. We covered a little of everything. I am
hopefully going to have even more students next
month.
Have you seen the Sunday emails???? Our
Director of Publicity, Sarah Sadullaeva, is notifying
us about the events of the next two weeks and the
next major event. This goes into your email box
with lightening speed that our newsletter can not
give. Always check to see if there is an attached
.pdf. This will be a brochure of our next major event
for which we need a registration.
As to the next event, Tony Burroughs will be here.
He is an excellent historian and genealogist. He is
African-American, but will speak on subjects that
we all need to know. We designed this program to
be very rounded and to increase the education of
every genealogist, not just black genealogists. Be
sure to look for the .pdfs on Sunday emails, and in
the brochure that was sent through snail mail.
Is your genealogy growing? If not, you may need to
see the new books and microfilm that are at the
library. There is always something new there.Liz Kutz
HAPPENINGS AROUND
DPL'S 8TH FLOOR VOLUNTEER DESK
Becoming a volunteer is a great way to get involved and
meet others. We encourage those of you who may be
just starting out in your family research to volunteer a
few hours a week or a few hours a month. This is a
wonderful opportunity to become familiar with the
genealogy section of the library and spend some time
greeting visitors and meeting fellow researchers. And a
fantastic perk is free parking!
Volunteers are needed to sit at the desk in either a
regular weekly slot or to fill in on the substitute list. We
are looking for individuals to fill in when a regular
volunteer is out. If you're interested, email the Volunteer
Coordinator at Volunteer@dallasgenealogy.org or call
Patrick McKinney at 214-522-9356.I
