1500 Players Nationwide
Duplicate Bridge Tourney
Fort Worth is to be the
bridge capital oi the nation
from July 4-8 when about 1500
duplicate bridge players form
all parts of the country will
converge here to participate in
the five day tournament. Many
of the contestants have national
ranking.
Sponsored by Fort Western
Unit No. 183 of Fort Worth
and sanctioned by the Ameri-
can Contract Bridge League of
New York, the players will com-
pete for the hard-to-earn mas-
ter points, silver trophies and
the Star-Telegram award] The
latter is presented annually to
the player making the best
showing in the 5-day event.
All events are to be staged
in the Grand Ballroom of the
Hotel Texas. Designated a sec-
tional tournament by the Ame-
rican Contract Bridge League
of New York, master points
are to be awarded proportion-
ately to the number of tables
in each event. These include
a knockout team of four, three
session open pairs, two session
master pairs limited to players
with 50 or more master points,
men’s and women’s pairs, one
session mixed pairs and side

Enlarges Building In Burleson
Southwestern Bell Telephone
Company recently revealed
plans to increase the size of its
building and telephone facilities
here, Sam Ogletree, company
manager for this area has an-
nounced.
The contract for the con-
struction work was awarded to
Quisle Construction Company
of Fort Worth, and work on the
project has begun. A comple-
tion date has been tentatively
set for this fall.
The new addition will be 58
feet wide by 41 feet deep, ad-
joining the rear of the present
building. It will be a one
story, no basement construction
in which additional dialing
equipment will be installed for
Burleson area customers.
Available space afforded by
the new addition will be used
for a chief switchman’s office,
as well as for more equipment
space. Plans also call for a
paved parking area, 50 feet by
70 feet, at the rear of the pres-
ent structure.
The existing telephone build-
ing here was completed in 1960,
following the purchase of the
site in 1958. New dialing
equipment was installed, re-
placing that perviously in use
here.
The nation-wide “2-5” tele-
phone numbering plan went
into service in Burleson sev-
eral years ago. Since that
time, local customers have been
using the prefix BYron 4, plus
four additional numbers; a
plan that connected them with
a nationwide system of long
distance dialing. Late last year
customers were given ‘‘extended
calling service," which, by
choice, either offered them, in
essence, a Fort Worth tele-
phone, or calling privileges to
towns immediately surrounding
the Burleson area.
“The fast growth of the Bur-
leson area is definitely reflect-
ed in the change in the tele-
phone service in this communi-
ty, Ogletree pointed out; “this
is particularly true within the
last few years. It seems that
almost overnight Burleson be-
came one of the fastest grow-
ing places in the Southwest and
the telephone company has had
to really stay on its toes to
keep up with this population
boom,” the manager said.
